In its defence, that has become quite popular in the US (where it originated), Canada, Brazil, Spain, France, and several other countries, and is played and followed by far more people than many of the sports currently in the Olympics.

1st set was 6 all and went to a tie break
2nd set was 6 all and went to a tie break
No 3rd defining set, just went straight to a tie break where Australia won 10 - 8 against USA.
I can only assume they are doing this from a scheduling viewpoint.

It’s called a professional tie break. Widely used on the circuit.
