Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

Buzzing for Keely, but Du Plantis doing 6.25 on his third attempt gave me absolute goosebumps. The great thing about the pole vault in every Olympics, I think, is that it's the last thing happening in the stadium that evening. So you have the whole stadium on your side. If anything, I think that was distracting Du Plantis a little bit too much.
You might think so, but as Mondo said to NBC in his post-interview, he really wanted the noise, as much as possible.

He said it reminded him of a (US) football night game at his alma-mater LSU in Death Valley in Baton Rouge, LA, his home state. His mom is originally from Sweden and that country approached him when he was 15. His dad is his coach and is a former US pole vaulter. Seeing those makeshift vaults in Mondo's backyard getting higher and more elaborate each year as he grew up was pretty cool too. He's been focused on this since a boy.

Really happy for Mondo to break it, and clearly he and US Silver Medalist Sam Kendricks who urged the crowd to make more noise have a great competitive relationship. Kendricks, who is from neighboring Mississippi, should be thrilled to earn his silver there given his competition.

What a special ending to the night with Keely and then the dramatic vault ending. 3rd time was a charm!

It makes you wonder why, with their vast resources, the bbc can’t do something similar - I guess they are too highly paid and too flash to do something so straightforward and sensible
It’s worse than that. They deliberately don’t properly cover in text events for which they don’t have tv rights.

The hatred between them and the fact you do have others who could challenge make it a mouthwatering final. Shame Wightman has been injured and misses this as well. I think Negusse can certainly challenge if these two take each other out with their tactics and run too hard or too fast too soon. In terms of strategy I just meant in terms of PB's, Kerr's is still down on the other three at their best, but finals tend to be more of a tactical battle. I don't think Ingebrigtsen can run it any other way than go out and wind the pace up more and more and hope to take too much out of Kerr. Hopefully Josh has too much again though. Much like Keely yesterday, I think he's mentally 100% tuned in and focussed on what he needs to do to take the title and I think he knows he has Ingebrigtsen scared and beaten if he executes.

Will be an interesting podium if they both get on it! Will they invite the other to join them on the top step?!
Why the animosity?

These kids are tough in the skateboarding
Generally have to be, given it is one of those sports where it is 90% falling on your arse, shoulders, elbows, knees, and head, at least early on. Any time you want to learn a new skill or push one you know to the next level it is almost a guarantee of at least minor injuries, as even if you use a cushion pit, you eventually have to practise the skill on a hard surface.

The two semi-pro skaters I have known have some of the longest injury histories of anyone I have ever known.

One of them has broken his right arm six times.

WTF is GK Barry? And why are the BBC wasting money on a woman who only has the vocal chords for a porn movie?

Saw her on Weakest Link a while ago and had no idea who she is. Some sort of influencer if other, though why anybody would want to be influenced by her I have no idea.

She was shit on the Weakest Link too.

Thanks for that. Sounds to me that Kerr is a street fighter and Ingerbrigtsen is a bit of an entitled moaner. Does he support the rags by any chance?

Sounds an arrogant tw@t doesn't he. He is the fastest though, but if the race isn't anything special speedwise that gives Kerr more of a chance.

Not paid that much attention, but it's being billed as between them - I wonder if someone else could surprise them?

Not even sure who else is in it...
