Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

Although not ideal, I bet medal per population size we're doing well.
Interestingly (or not as the case may be) we are 20th in terms of gold medals per head. Per million of population it is -

Dominica 13.69
St Lucia 5.55
Brunei 2.2
Ireland 0.79
Australia 0.64
New Zealand 0.57
Netherlands 0.51
Croatia 0.50
Slovenia 0.47
Chinese Taipei 0.36
Hungary 0.3
Sweden 0.28
Serbia 0.28
Georgia 0.27
Hong Kong 0.27
South Korea 0.21
France 0.2
Azerbaijan 0.19
Norway 0.19
GB 0.18

USA are 0.07
Japan 0.09
China 0.02

If you look at total medals and say a gold is worth 3, silver 2 and bronze 1, the order is

Dominica
St lucia
Grenada
Brunei
New Zealand
Australia
Ireland
Chinese Taipei
Croatia
Jamaica
Netherlands
Georgia
Fiji
Kosovo
Hungary
Cape Verde
Sweden
Cyprus
Slovenia
France
Israel
GB (22nd)

USA are 59th and China 64th

India are last in both tables

However countries with populations over 30 million with no medals at all (excluding Russia who are excluded from the Olympics) are:-

Pakistan 240 million
Nigeria 223 million
Bangladesh 173 million
Congo 102 million
Vietnam 99 million
Thailand 72 million
Tanzania 67m
Myanmar 55 m
Sudan 48m
Iraq 46m
Afghanistan 42m
Morocco 38m
Saudi Arabia 37 m
Angola 37m
Yemen 34m
Ghana 34m
Mozambique 35m
Nepal 31m
Madagascar 30m

So on both measures Dominica and St Lucia are winning the Olympics

I should add that on the way back from West Ham last season we were talking about fantasy football and my youngest went “oh my dad’s a spreadsheet wanker” (I admit I did have a spreadsheet for fantasy football) - so I was basically on a par with the briefcase wanker from the Inbetweeners! - which unfortunately has stuck

Then ours (Nielsen) just flinched on her heat for a false start.

Lucky to get a yellow, if I am honest.

Klavar was supremely lucky for her bizarre false start in the earlier heat, mind.
I actually think Klaver had a point on hers, they're holding them in the blocks way too long.

Eh, I am not sure I agree there. And it is not the time to “protest” that, if that was actually her reason for simply setting back down at the shot.

I imagine any longer and she might start cramping. Tall athlete in that position for that long, not ideal.
