Only had the laptop for a week and already experiencing problems. Not sure if this partner18 is the problem or not, it seemed to be stopping me getting on here via Chrome but so far Firefox appears to be ok. Can anyone advise whether or not I need to do anything please.

cheers

Yep, it's a browser hijacker/redirect.

Try running this : <a class="postlink" href="http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/</a> and see if it detects and clears.

If not you can follow these steps to remove :-

Cheers StevieMc, I'm trying the first option now, hope to fuck it works because I really don't know where to start with option 2. Edit
Nothing from the quick scan, trying the full one now.

No worries. Option 2 is a bit involved so try this after running MalwareBytes, if there's still a problem :-

First see if you have a program installed called Anti Phishing Domain Advisor. Uninstall it, reboot your machine and see if this solves the problem.

If not :-

Click the Chrome menu button on the browser toolbar, select "Tools" and then click on "Extensions".

In the "Extensions" tab, remove (by clicking on the Recycle Bin) the "Proxy Tool, PortaldoSites Toolbar, Yontoo, BrowserProtect" and any other unknown extensions from Google Chrome.

Set Google Chrome default search engine from Partner18.mydomainadvisor.com to Google.

Click the Chrome menu button, then select "Settings" and click on "Manage search engines" in the Search section. In the Search Engines dialog that appears, select "Google" and click the "Make Default" button that appears in the row. Search for Partner18.mydomainadvisor.com in the Search Engines list, and click the X button that appears at the end of the row.

Change Google Chrome homepage from Partner18.mydomainadvisor.com to your preferred homepage.

Thing is, since my OP I've uninstalled both Chrome + Firefox, so am left with just IE, which was already there when I bought it. In my ignorance I thought I'd try and trace my steps back to last week and start again, no doubt I've made things worse now.
For what its worth I'd be happy to start again and learn what I did to allow this thing onboard.
Never used Windows before never mind Windows 8, or 8.1 as it is now. Always had Macs provided by work and everything seemed easy, so I really am a novice, feel like chucking the bloody thing up the garden.

Done the scan, nothing found. Re-installed Chrome and checked as you advised, nothing in extensions except that mcafee site advisor was not enabled, have enabled it now. Everything seems like it's back to how it was before the partner18 episode, so thanks a lot Steviemc, here's hoping I can keep it clean from now on, will try my best.

I've had plenty of guidance in the past from TCIB, ftp etc etc but I think he's had enough of me now, probably avoiding this thread like the plague, can't blame him...

Thanks again.

Hehe not at all nw42, just been migrating server stuff, will sort your account tonight mate :)
I have missed a few pm's like usual probably.

Glad you got this sorted, only just saw the thread.

No worries. Glad things seem to be running ok. That particular browser hijack is usually the result of simply visiting a malicious website, and not many antivirus progs detect it.

With a windows machine they can be a bit more vunerable, however there are a couple of free programs which you can add to your system to keep it running clean. In addition to the one mentioned earlier I regularly use a couple more (see links below). I generally run these on an ad-hoc basis, once a week or so, or when my machines doing nothing else. Keep them updated, as updates are free as well, and they help clear your machine of ads, spyware, and other annoying stuff :-

Spybot (Free edition) <a class="postlink" href="http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/</a>

Super Antispyware (Free) <a class="postlink" href="http://www.superantispyware.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.superantispyware.com/</a>
