I've been having a look at our stats for the Spurs game and thought I'd make my first thread after seeing our midfield and their pass/pass completion figures...

Nasri - 68 successful passes (93%)
Toure - 89 successful passes (93%)
Silva - 62 successful passes (93%)
Barry - 64 successful passes (90%)

Here are the rest of the team for comparison:

Savic 15 successful passes (94%)
Kompany 42 successful passes (89%)
Lescott 39 successful passes (83%)
Zabaleta 38 successful passes (81%)
Dzeko 39 successful passes (80%)
Clichy 46 successful passes (79%)
Aguero 19 successful passes (73%)
Richards 7 successful passes (64%)
Hart 21 successful passes (60%)

Just as a comparison, Spurs entire midfield managed a total of 133 successful passes between them. City's managed 283!

As far as I'm concerned that's pretty incredible, and the figure for Toure was a real shock for me.

Why?

He is one of the top passers in the world. He is great for short distance and long (See Balotelli v Villa). You dont play for Barcelona if your not good at the way they play.

Anyway, great figures that show all the players are adept at passing to teammates and keeping the ball, no big hoofs up pitch anymore!

Not surprised, Yaya has been doing that for years at Barca.

How many on average do Barca do? 400+ right?

Quite true, and I expected him to be right up there, but I didn't expect such a big gap between him and the rest. Looking back though, he was always popping up in those little triangles.<br /><br />-- Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:30 pm --<br /><br />

I can't remember off the top of my head but that sounds about right. Our team as a whole managed 549 successful passes! Hart also had the highest number of unsuccessful passes, which just goes to show the whole booting it up the pitch doesn't work!

Well he is level with the players who you want/assume to have higher pass rates and playing in the position he was compared to the rest it is only normal he had a little higher.

I cant wait until Ramadan is over so Yaya can have a feast and be staying in his position before surging forward like last season.

lol just found this

724 passes for Barcelona, versus Arsenal's 199. Needs little embroidery, really."<br /><br />-- Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:32 pm --<br /><br />So puts us into perspective.

Barcelona pass for passing's sake at times, they'll take the ball from the penalty area, back to the defence and start again.

We don't do that, we move the opposition around and increase the pace around the penalty area, we'l carry the ball from midfield where as Barca seem to play one two's until it reaches Messi/6 yard box.

More passes doesn't automatically = better team. Just different style/philosophies.

Good thread btw.

If we're going to do comparisons, here is the United midfield vs Arsenal:

Nani - 31 successful passes (76%)
Cleverley - 62 successful passes (90%)
Anderson - 38 successful passes (81%)
Young - 47 successful passes (82%)

It's the ideal way to play though.

If they have the ball their opponents can't score.

we need to bring dunnie back pretty sharpish so that we can re-balance the team

I mean, having players at crucial "passing" areas below striker(s) into 90% that means domination/wins/titles. Incredible.

In the last ten minutes we had about 90% possession, at one point Toure was playing one-twos with each member of the defence for about 2 minutes straight, he probably racked up his extra 20-odd passes then.

Think teams that would rush us and play 100 miles an hour none stop would make us make mistakes! Just an observation at wembley second half if you watch it again that's what the scum did and caused us some trouble...I think we relaxed too much when they brought the subs on and once they got a grip of the game they didn't stop running and closing down the whole second half we also had chances to score too though, can't wait till we play them at there dump they will play the same tactics it'll be tough and an exciting game Me Thinks...

It'll also be interesting how Chelsea do in a few weeks too.

City vs Spuds

Hart 21 successful passes (60%)

Zabaleta - 38 successful passes (81%)
Kompany - 42 successful passes (89%)
Lescott - 39 successful passes (83%)

Dzeko - 39 successful passes (80%)

Rags vs Arse

Smalling - 53 passes, (89%)
Jones - 42 passes (90%)
Evans - 43 passes (88%)
Evra - 39 passes (85%)

Nani - 35 passes (83%)
Cleverley - 67 passes (91%)
Anderson - 45 passes (87%)
Young - 55 passses (87%)

Welbeck: 12 passes (67%)
Rooney: 49 passes (82%)

(Bare in mind we played a stronger opponent then the rags)

Your City figures look the same as mine but your United ones look a bit high on their end in comparison. Different sources? I took mine for both teams from the Guardian Chalkboard.

Our passing is a strength of ours though.

And Barca hit 1000+ passes in some games last year I heard.

Please can we stop with the comparisons with Barca? They don't play football which is best; they play the best football.
