I haven't read his book yet but it got me thinking. If he hadn't have got that terrible injury, how do you think his career would have progressed? Personally, I think Swales would have sold him for an unspectacular fee two weeks after saying to the press: "Lakey is a City boy through and through. We'd never sell him."

I remember going to the reserves quite often during 85-86 season when he and his brother michael were the most outstanding players on show(along with white and hinchcliffe).

Cant remember what happened to Michael as from what i remembered, he was quality on the wing. The team that season was well worth watching with the older players like Jim Tolmie putting in some of the most wonderful performances during that garbage period.

Jim Tolmie. Now he was class act. My first city hero. Played in Adidas world champion boots.

Sorry about digressing.

He was invited down to City and played about 6 games, got MOTM twice and scored a few goals, went in to see Billy mcNeill hoping to get a contract and was pretty much shown the door with McNeill saying we didn't have the money.

Went on to Play for Macc and Sheffield United but like Paul suffered a couple of injuries ( one a knee injury) and had to call it a day.

Saw him match Gascoigne at Maine Rd (who despite being a fuckin lunatic was Englands last truly world class player) Saw him in the excellent 86 youth cup winning team. Another time we lost 3-0 at Ipswich on a Saturday- then went to top of the table Bradford, who were a decent outfit in late 80's and Lake put in a brilliant performance scoring in a 2-4 away win. I was yards away from him when his knee gave away close the Kippax/North Stand corner. Not too far away from where he swallowed his tongue either. But to answer the OP's question- Swales would have sold him to Everton or Spurs like the rest of the decent talent.

There's no doubt he would have been the greatest player we would have produced, the thing is we would never of had the chance to say such things even if his knee hadn't blown out, as Swales would have flogged him at the first chance of a million or two, meaning he would have gone on to be someone else's great, (possibly the Rags) with MCFC nothing more than Paul Lakes first stepping stone to greatness

If anyone missed it listen to his interview on 5live via the iplayer that just finished. interesting, embarrassing for what City were like back then, inspirational for what we're becoming.

I used to like Danny Kelly But he had Paul on his show tonight for a hour & with all the adverts & Kelly pratling on about himself or Spurs Lakey hardly got a word in,
Kelly has become a right prat since joining talk sport.

Just had a shower having listened to talkshite for an hour. It transpires that the rags, Arsenal, Liverpool and G Rangers were interested in him at the time he signed his contract. Turns out Swales wasn't ready to sell him. As the above poster says, the spurs degenerate doing the interview basically told us his dull anecdotes for half-an-hour but the times that Lake spoke he came across well. I'll be taking his biography on holiday as it sounds a cut above the average biography and his story is a lot more interesting than most footballer's.

Yes I mean who wants to hear Kellys experience of Maine Road, except the bit when we chased him out of the Kippax. I'll have to get the book though, if what Lakey said tonight is anything to go off sounds a good read.

How do I find this please?

Enjoyed the interview. Different age they live in now with prep for life after football offered by most of the big boys now (allegedly). Will defo buy the book - should be a good read.

Seems I must have heard a different interview. Just checked and it was on 5live, thus the absence of shite, for a full 25 mins. All Paul Lake.

I downloaded it to my Kindle to read on the train to/from Wembley yesterday and it is great; on the way home I was laughing out loud at some of the memories. Totally confused a couple of rags who kept going on about "you couldn't write the script, another injury time goal against 'em". And I had a smile on my face all the time!!

Can't wait to read the rest of it. I am also going to buy a hard back copy and hope to get him to sign it sometime.

p.s. obviously the rags have a very limited memory span as they must have made that remark at least 5 times that I noticed, not sure if they made it more often because I wasn't really listening!!
