Paul Simpson

Christ when I saw this thread that was the first thing I thought of. I was based in Pompey at the time so easy for me to get to that one Made the mistake of breaking ranks on the way out to get back to Copnor I came close to getting lynched by the angry locals.
Was in the away end that day, great celebrations when Simmo scored. Portsmouth were up there with us going for promotion too weren't they?
Fratton Park was a very traditional ground(quite open to the elements too).Home fans often made a bit of noise and created a decent atmosphere. Never saw any trouble as such but always felt you had to 'have your wits about you' down there!
Going back to Simpson, he looked pretty decent when he played in those indoor 'veterans' competitions(was it called soccer sixes or something like that?)

Really please to read that Simmo is in better health. Loved watching Simmo and had the pleasure of meeting him after he scored a spectacular goal in a reserves game on a freezing sub zero night in 1983-84 - a nice friendly guy he was and very modest with it. He revitalised that promotion campaign in 1984-85. Loved Simmo. He did well in the top flight scoring a terrific free kick v Sheff Wed on Boxing Day 1986. He was sold too soon. Hope he gets a job at City were he'd great with the youngsters.
