I watched that Weller documentary. That man is a true legend.
I was well into the Jam at school, then moved on, largely ignoring the style council, though they made some great singles.
That "Jerusalem" film they made looked so bad, that I've got to see it, and it must be so hard to grow up in the public eye like that, making so many mistakes and being pounced on by critics, just willing you to fail. He came through it all and is still making fantastic music, and managed not be an arsehole. The fact that his dad has managed him since he started out as a kid in the early 70s is probably the main reason for this. That's a proper dad for you.

I've always quite liked Weller. I now love the man. He never sold out, and has always worn his heart on his sleeve.
He is the epitome of THE WORKING CLASS HERO.

What kind of work is that then? Not sure he ever had what most of us would class as a job. I still love the jam to this day though. Can a man with all his dosh still be a working class hero?

He's been playing/writing/performing music since he was about 14. That's his work. His roots make him working class and his politics haven't changed. He's still a socialist at heart. It doesn't matter how much money you have. Would a lottery winner from Langley be accepted by the chattering classes?

Weller could have gone up his own arse, cocaine mad in the 80s with the likes of spandau ballet et al, instead he played benefit gigs for the miners and wrote about social injustice. His credentials are intact, and the world is richer for his contribution.

Can't fault that view apart from the tax breaks his accountant gets for him. If you don't pay your full tax to your fellow worker can you still be classed a socialist? Maybe the new recession will throw up some more weller/bragg type songwriters. Would a lottery winner from langley really give a f*** about the chattering classes, probably not.

he is a dullard and his music is singularly uninspiring, workmanlike and average at best. no amount of "passion" and "commitment" can disguise that fact. reminds me of CITY under stuart pearce. we all supported the miners, so what? a handful of OK singles thirty years ago does not a legend make, soz!
If your looking for a proper british music icon Morrissey is yer man.

Weller isn't even in my top 20 favourite artists, but I've got a lot of respect for him.
My favourite band of all time is The Smiths and I was lucky enough to see the them live a couple of times.
However Mozzers solo stuff has been a mixture of good, average and cack. I only wish it was a patch on
the Smiths output but it just doesn't come anywhere near.
