Let’s get it torn down, there’s nothing great about this man or his family so I can’t see the point of his statue still standing if it offends. It also gives us a great opportunity to just nuke the whole of Piccadilly Gardens and start again - awful part of town. As for new, more appropriate statues in their place, we could have great black men like Pele, Trevor McDonald, Frank Bruno or Lenny Henry.

If you can have Pele then you better fucking replace Lenny Henry with Richard Pryor ASAP

I take it you are taking the piss with pele

Not the first time calls have happened to remove it along side gladstones and renaming mosley st

But yeah stick a statue of Len Johnson up

Well - whoever goes up in its place is subjective. I’m just saying the first step is to remove it.

You could go manc centric and put Tony Wilson up. But I was thinking of great Black Men/Women - ideally British ones.

knowing Manchester council they’ll probably put up a 50ft Karl Marx statue or a bronze bust of Pat Karney.

I'd prefer a statue of the twin lads from the group The Whispers.

Len johnson, born in clayton boxing champion in the 20s/30s but was barred from representing great britain because he was mixed race (father from sierra leone, mother was Irish) and civil defence fire and rescue officer in WW2 and then worked on many local l, national and international political project to promote equality for black and pther minoroties throughout the commonwealth.

We had to do some stuff for black history month in work last year and found oit about this mancunian sporting lad you never hear about.

I honestly didn’t know about him. Great shout.

Just edited above post.

Yeah I had never heard of him but my work means we are involved in black history month and looking up black people in the UK through history he popped up, like many mancunians in history he is pretty much forgotten which is a shame.

I've got to say, I HATE the tokenism of 'Black History Month'.

That would be the first thing I get rid of and replace it with a insertion of learning about other cultures as well that have helped shape the world/ technology.

Dick

clearly should be Stan Horne

What about the Michael Jackson one that was knocking about the football museum last time I went in. Surely nobody could object to MJ presiding over drug dealing from a plinth in the gardens, could they?

You're going to need a bigger bait.
