Pele - was he that good? And why ?

the most exciting football team I have ever seen. Pele did things I had never seen before with a football.
Colin Bell and Pele made me fall in love with football. For me, beautiful football is everything.
England went toe to toe with them as well in 1970.
Was it Franny who missed a great chance to equalise.

Agree with all that except I think it would be a great debate Brazil 1970 v Brazil 1982. The fact they won the cup in 1970 gives them the advantage but Brazil 1982 were something else IMO.
Weren't they just? I was only 6 when Brazil won in 1970 but the 82 team brought so much joy and........eventual agony

You can judge a player by watching them on TV, but to really appreciate how good a player is, how they run, turn, track back, lose their markers, sprint, balance, etc you have to watch them live. I've seen Pele play live for Santos when they played a friendly against Sheffield Wednesday. I'm sure it was in 1972, which would make Pele around 32 then. I've also been lucky enough to have watched lots of other great players live, such as Cruyff, Maradona, Messi and many others. Whilst each were different, in different era's, the best for me was Pele.

Without wishing to derail the thread, I've also watched every City player live since the mid 1960's to present day. The best for me was Colin Bell. Obviously I'm a FOC now but I still appreciate a great player when I watch them live. Only a few years ago I watched a young lad around 6 or 7 years old playing live for a boys team called Reddish Vulcans. Keep an eye on him because he has potential. His name is Phil Foden.
Fascinating. Tell me baring in mind the wealth of talent you have seen over that period of time where would pitch the highest ceiling of Phil’s potential?

Just get hold of any clips you can of Brazil's matches in 1970. And if you can, the full final. Yes, he had a brilliant team around him. But he was their undisputed king (just listen to what Rivelino has to say about him, and Rivelino was no slouch himself). Then you will understand what the fuss is about.
For sheer longevity of excellence, he easily outshines Maradona, Best and yes, even Cruyff.
Three world cup winning medals? Even if he barely played in the middle one. Three?? Say that again?

That's a very interesting question, one I've often thought about. I believe either side would give the other a run for its money. I know one thing: it would be a footballing masterclass.
Christ, Zico, Falcao and Socrates against Jairzinho, Pele and Tostao. Droolworthy.

Following on from the Peter Doherty thread, was Pele that good?
Before my time but where as you see countless reels of maradonna, best, messi etc , all lauded as being the best at the time, you only see bits of Pele.

So .. for those that saw him play, was he the best and if so why?
Not old enough to have seen him but yes
