If as many suggest, pep was always lined up to come this summer and MP was in effect 'caretaker, why didn't we get a manager similar in playing style to pep to be 'caretaker?'
Someone who would have had defenders and keeper playing out from the back? Someone who was big on rondos like pep?

And why did we sign players who were clearly never going to be suited to pep's brand of football? I.e. bony and mangala and to a lesser extent, otamendi

A number of reasons;

City always wanted him this summer but it was only in July last year that is was fully agreed.
Pep is one of a kind
Pellegrini was seen as being a close as was possible (so much so, Barca were also after him when we were at the end with Mancini)
Pellegrini, whilst not the first choice ahead of Pep, was the first choice three years ago, he couldn't be instructed how to manage, he's his own man.

I think the pedigree of the manager would supercede the proposed philosophy to the end degree.

If we consider managers with the closest philosophies Michael Laudrups career was still in its infancy and unproven in the Premiership, Tuchel was managing in the Austrian league and LVG was preparing Holland for the World Cup. None were suitable st the time.

A lot of managers follow the posession based philosophy, including Pellers, but few follow the concepts of positionsl play to the extent Pep does so there was not really a proven alternative. Tuchel if his career continues along the same path will be our next manager. Get money on it now
