From masterclass at Newcastle to Disasterclass at Madrid.
The tactics from Pep, and in general his understanding of the team, is arguably worse here than when he messed up the champions league final.
Every single adjustment in this game shows horrendous understanding of the squad on a fundamental level.
1. Haaland is injured. Okay, adjust. Play KdB false 9, or something akin to this. This leads to his worst change:
2. In playing Bernie, Savinho and Foden, he played every single player OUT OF POSITION. Didn't think this was possible but Bernie and Foden don't want to be wingers, and Savinho is not a player through the middle. How Pep doesn't understand this at this point is baffling.
3. How can you play Gundogan, he is not capable of back to back games, he has no legs. At most, 1 of Kova, Bernie or Gundogan should have played in the middle. We have seen this all season the problems with these 3 and overplaying them or playing too many of them at once.
4. Khusanov. He played RB, but his role seemed so unclear in possession, the lad was clearly confused. He also can't speak English, so why change his tactical role so quickly before he adapts to a certain system. You can't switch things up on him that quickly.
Obviously the players didn't play well, but when you set them up so poorly, I give them a little more excuse.
This game is all on Pep. Horrific.
