Peterloo Massacre film / Films made in Mancheter

Don’t forget to give us a review mate.
Just back. The first ninety minutes is probably 30 minutes too long but technically it's a brilliant film. Locations, artwork, cinematography, costumes, etc. It's historically as accurate as it can be

There was a Q&A with Mike Leigh & Maxine Peake afterwards which was beamed to all cinemas. The actual event was at Home but I saw it at the Printworks. Leigh was keen to stress he wanted to keep it accurate and not over-dramatise it. So although it features actors like Peake & Rory Kinnear (who is excellent) there's no real star who the film is centred around and there's no false narrative of a made-up story for dramatic effect. Had it been Ken Loach it would have been a lot more ‘message heavy’ but Leigh said he wanted the audience to take their own view of how the story related to any contemporary scenarios

The only other criticism apart from that it could have done with some more judicious editing is that the magistrates who are the ones responsible for maintaining law & order are a bit overdone as pantomime villains. But overall a very impressive achievement.

Wasn't some of the early colonial Singapore scenes from Empire of the Sun filmed in Hale?

Cheers, looking forward to watching it
