Almost two weeks ago Pakistani batsman Ahmed shazad got hit on the head with a helmet on and suffered a minor fracture and this week Philip Hughes tragedy and both the deliveries were in mid 130kph range which is not fast in cricketing terms ,Quality and method of making of helmets is something really to be looked into going forward
Hughes wasn't hit in the helmet. It hit his neck under the ear and damaged an artery which caused breeding on the brain. He was essentially dead within seconds of the delivery. Only cpr and life support kept him alive as long as he was.

Just saw the press conference of the doctors, but still batsmen need more protection against the short ball if mid 130 deliveries ar e doing this

Very sad news, I feel as though he was just getting a good grip on his career and it was really looking good for him. You can only feel for his family and Sean Abbott

Tragic news that will surely send a ripple through all of cricket and some kind of change will happen, even if it's just the players making a decision to change something. I rmemeber after the Mark Boucher blinding incident, all the keepers started wearing glasses without being told, as they all instinctively worried having seen the potential for problems, and I'd be surprised if something similar didn't happen here. I'm a bit surprised that cricket hasn't gone down the baseball route, of having helmets that offer far more protection to one side of your head than the other, given that only one side is in any danger at all of being hit? But no matter what you do, accidents will still happen. I think the problem is that instinctively you turn your head to try and get out of the way and their is very little protection for anything behind the ear on a cricket helmet. I remeber Shane Watson taking a similar blow in the ashes a few years ago and getting it squarely in the neck.

Hard to see how some of the players involved will recover from this, especially the poor bowler, who must be a complete wreck. Thought sgo out to all those involved.

Special tribute to the lad.

Bowling short pitched deliveries has been part and parcel of the game and I dare say will continue Moomba even in the face of this terrible event.

I don't think that will change, although I'd be surprised to see it continue as a sustained tactic against a batsman rather than a one off surprise delivery.

I think it will have an effect on all players in particular fast bowlers for some time to come but its difficult to imagine that a tactic that has been part of the game for so long will be outlawed over any length of time.

This tragic occurrence obviously is a rare event especially at the elite level and touch wood it doesn't happen again but any sport involving a ball being hurled at close to 90 miles per hour from such a short distance obviously has its risk.

Hughes will never be forgotten and apparently was a much loved and respected player to boot and you never want anybody to go before there time in any circumstance but the game will go on and deliveries like that which resulted in Phil's demise will be bowled again.

I think the short ball should not be used against tailenders - they just don't have the capacity to deal with them.

The other area to look for will be players fielding at Silly mid off or Short Leg. I've only just realised how stupid I had been when I played fielding there :(

Left this at the cricket ground this morning, least I could do

Always been scared of a corky ball, feels like a giant rock. So sad to hear this news. Reminds me of a story of my local cricket team. Number 5 batsmen was waiting for his turn and as the 3rd wicket fell the no.4 guy told him to go in at 4 instead. He quickly got padded up helmet on and forgot to put his box in. Fourth ball in from a fast bowler he got wacked in the privates and blood flooded the whole pitch. His pants were all covered in red and till this day never seen a grown man scream like that. Put me off playing cricket that.
