Him, Dave Ward, Pete Baker, Umberto, Susie Mathis and that red bastard Mike Sweeney were all a part of my life when I was growing up.
Oh and Steve Penk's real name is Penkethman btw.
Does anyone else remember those Doan's backache pills and the unfortunately names Ayds slimming supplements adverts that were incessantly on the station all the time?
Remember the DJ's well GDM and the big photos around the building leading away from Piccadilly Gardens, always remember oddly, you know when you have a picture in your mind how someone would look from just listening to their voice ? Well I remember Dave Ward and Susie Mathis being just how I'd imagined, a bit weird really.
Ancoats, I remember that 'it's a goal' and 'oh noooo', it was always the same feeling of trepidation wondering whether they were going to go to Maine Road or not :-S.
I used to spend most Saturdays from the age of 8 to 11 working/loitering in my dad's shop in Miles Platting and the radio was always on. If City were at home then quite often my uncle and occasionally my dad, if he could be persuaded, would take me to Maine Road but if we were away I would spend the whole time between 3 and 4.45 (half time was ten minutes back then) listening with a mixture of fear/dread/anticipation for both of those jingles.
I've actually got a programme somewhere from the Maine Road Derby in 1978/79 season which has pictures of all those DJ's in it - I think Piccadilly sponsored the game. Steve Penk must have been starting out at the time and it's fair to say he's filled out a little. Phil Wood looked like a wizard. Dave Ward like a sleazy womaniser and Mike Sweeney a ****.
