Wythenshawe is set to have a regenerated Civic. Should be great for the area.

All been approved and MCC say they are still going ahead with all the plans despite not winning the Govt. ‘Levelling Up’ bid for £20m to help go towards it (I think somewhere in Wales won the bid in this round).
I heard they were hoping that this was going to go ahead, where are they going to get the money from, I have no idea, probably privately funded but I’m not holding my breath. Civic Centre has been left and it’s the council’s fault allowing it even though it went into private landlords for a few years, they never fulfilled half their promise. The Levelling Up fund big winner in the NW was the Morecambe Bay Eden Project but locally I think Partington and Oldham got about £20 million each.

Interesting fact: Wythenshawe Garden City (as it was original named!) is the largest and most populous area in the borough of Manchester.

Around 115,000 of Manchester’s 550,000 population live in Wythenshawe (~21%).

It was as Woolco later, definitely Woolworths when I was a kid.
Honestly don’t remember that mate, my memory says it was Woolco when it was first built.

‘In 2007, Asda opened a new superstore on the site of the old Co-operative store (originally built by Woolco in the mid-1970s, which also features a multi-storey car park).’.

Thought so Chapo, remember the big red WOOLCO sign bud.

Used to be very useful for us when we lived over the border in Stockport back when we had young kids, fully pedestrianised (if you discount the overclocked mobility scooters) and decent cheap shops. I think I read a few years back it was one of the only town centres in the UK bucking the trend and actually becoming more busy in this era of online shopping.

That land near the bingo has been derelict for years, be good to see them do something positive with it. We used to have a phone number a couple of digits different from one of the pawn shops in wythenshawe too, we sometimes got messages on our answering phone leaving full bank details or demanding we call off the chasers.
