I worked on the Northern Hub and was in the process of setting up a site compound on the Mayfield depot for the forthcoming works to Piccadilly.
One day we were told to stop and were basically told it's not happening. No site compound has ever returned. This was summer 2015. Here is an idea of what they wanted to do.

Yet were paying for HS2...

This plan is needed far more.

From my own experience I'm used to the trains I work being congested in that area, averaging delays of 8 mins.

As you can see by the photo in the link the new platforms 15 & 16 which I'm sure 13 & 14 would have been included looked impressive. A new stand alone station for these lines really.
There are other photos which I cannot find but I have seen showing the viaduct that would run from Piccadilly to Oxford Rd (with new lines) between Granby Row and Manchester Met Uni and the whole revamp of Oxford Rd station.
The University at the time had a petition to stop it going ahead.
