I assume what the OP is getting at is how many big, well known players have we made a profit on. The answer is not many because we're at the top of the footballing food chain, and don't tend to sell our best players because we use them ourselves.

Fairly sure we made a profit on Frank Carrodus, we signed him from Alty for a few White&Swales tellys and then sold him 5 years later to Villa.

Niall Quinn, bought for £800k, sold for £1.3m.

It's easy to see how much of a financial mess we were in back then,and how desperate the club was for cash! Niall Quinn was worth a lot more than 1.3m. Sunderland got him for a steal as it turned out!
