playing dvd,s on laptop

hi all
hope you can help
just tried to play a dvd ( not pirate ) on my lap top for the first time and have this problem !
the background noise is fine but when they speak i hear nothing
its on windows media player and as i am not sure what i am doing dont want to change/adjust anything
is there an easy answer apart from getting a new lap top / dvd !!!!!!

Maybe you have the wrong audio track playing on the DVD? Try putting it on stereo instead of 5.1 channel in the DVD menu? Just right click the image screen and go to audio and then choose the one that isn't ticked.
 
If there's background noise then theres nothing wrong with your laptop, or the DVD. try tinkering with the sound settings whilst the DVD is playing...the two sounds might be on two different channels, so in theory you could be listening to the DVD in mono rather than Stereo.
