Political relations between UK-EU

Every day we diminish ourselves on the international stage and damage our own economy to boot

Ironic that many of most staunch Brexiteers believe they are the heirs to the Thatcher legacy when in reality Brexit would have been the last thing that Thatcher wanted, as evidenced by her speech in 1988 launching the campaign for the formation of the single market.

“Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers—visible or invisible—giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the world's wealthiest and most prosperous people.

Bigger than Japan. Bigger than the United States. On your doorstep. And with the Channel Tunnel to give you direct access to it.

It's not a dream. It's not a vision. It's not some bureaucrat's plan. It's for real. And it's only five years away.”

And we’ve thrown it all away. Even after voting for Brexit we didn’t have to throw that vision away. That’s entirely down to Johnson and his handlers and enablers.

And that speech of Thatcher's should have been pushed time and time again by the remainers as so many of the leavers (at least the rabid gammon wing) would have argued Thatcher was right in every situation.

As Ive stated before .... the performance of the Conservative led Remain Campaign was so poor it was destined to fail... almost like it was part of the plan.

she has been on SKY News Paper review tonight further embarrassing herself with her " I am right your views don't matter " attitude........interesting for a supposed libertarian. If she keeps this up virtually any viewer could probably have her sectioned.
Horrible woman.

Hmmm ..... I understand that the Eu were going to insist that the UK raised State Pensions to be in line with Europe. That would've more than doubled the current UK state pension (and may have reduced retirement age)

Were Leavers aware of this?

There is talk of kicking the age you get it further down the road - at this rate I am going to be 70 !!! How are you supposed to plan for your retirement if part of that plan involves the state pension - however poor it may be - and they keep moving the goal posts?

From what I can gather HMG are offering grants for those who buy a retirement and funeral package at the same time, but they are only coughing up if the two events occur within the space of a twenty four hour period.

And instead of the proverbial 'gold watch' companies are now giving coffins to retirees.

Only two issues with this -

1/ I wouldn't trust Johnson to deliver my paper in the morning
2/ Johnson doesn't care - he never did. The sooner these people wake up to the fact that they were lied to the better

Was that known 5 years ago? And if so why the hell didn't the remain mob mention it? The leave campaign was full of lies and painted buses but remain just didn't do enough.

Yes it was .... but as per painted in a negative way and not run with by the Tory Press. I have always maintained that there wasn't a ''Remain'' campaign run by the Tories. They always wanted us out.

From a Tory point of view, this is clearly a baad thing. And indeed the Express tells us that

“Some MEPs fear the EU is planning a ‘social union’, a centralised welfare state. …. The concerns have been highlighted by Tory MEP David Campbell Bannerman who has said that the European Commission is holding back a massive amount of centralising legislation until after the referendum.”

Meanwhile, again from the Express, Jeremy Corbyn welcomes the idea

Yesterday Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn made it clear he and his party wanted a social union with the EU. He said: “We want people to vote to remain in the EU so that we can develop a social Europe.”

The Express spins this idea as EU taking control away from UK. You could describe is a way of giving control to EU workers, unemployed, pensioners, etc etc. The idea is based on a move to get individual EU countries to sign up to the European Pillar of Social Rights. And indeed Marianne Thyssen, the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, has been speaking about the benefits that would follow if all EU countries did apply that Pillar, click the Pillar of Social Rights to find out more. I hadn’t heard about it before researching this but it seems a pretty good set of aspirations to me, but then I don’t vote Tory. In brief:

The Pillar of Social Rights is about delivering new and more effective rights for citizens. It builds upon 20 key principles, structured around three categories:

Equal opportunities and access to the labour market

Fair working conditions

Social protection and inclusion

In section 3 you find mention of pensions amongst lots of other policies the EU wishes to promote. Have a read through…

Chapter III: Social protection and inclusion

11. Childcare and support to children Children have the right to affordable early childhood education and care of good quality. Children have the right to protection from poverty. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds have the right to specific measures to enhance equal opportunities.

12. Social protection Regardless of the type and duration of their employment relationship, workers, and, under comparable conditions, the self-employed, have the right to adequate social protection.

13. Unemployment benefits The unemployed have the right to adequate activation support from public employment services to (re)integrate in the labour market and adequate unemployment benefits of reasonable duration, in line with their contributions and national eligibility rules. Such benefits shall not constitute a disincentive for a quick return to employment.

14. Minimum income Everyone lacking sufficient resources has the right to adequate minimum income benefits ensuring a life in dignity at all stages of life, and effective access to enabling goods and services. For those who can work, minimum income benefits should be combined with incentives to (re)integrate into the labour market.

15. Old age income and pensions Workers and the self-employed in retirement have the right to a pension commensurate to their contributions and ensuring an adequate income. Women and men shall have equal opportunities to acquire pension rights. Everyone in old age has the right to resources that ensure living in dignity.

16. Health care Everyone has the right to timely access to affordable, preventive and curative health care of good quality.

17. Inclusion of people with disabilities People with disabilities have the right to income support that ensures living in dignity, services that enable them to participate in the labour market and in society, and a work environment adapted to their needs.

18. Long-term care Everyone has the right to affordable long-term care services of good quality, in particular home-care and community-based services.

19. Housing and assistance for the homeless Access to social housing or housing assistance of good quality shall be provided for those in need. Vulnerable people have the right to appropriate assistance and protection against forced eviction. Adequate shelter and services shall be provided to the homeless in order to promote their social inclusion.

20. Access to essential services Everyone has the right to access essential services of good quality, including water, sanitation, energy, transport, financial services and digital communications. Support for access to such services shall be available for those in need.

And yes, Ms Thyssen does want to move forward on the contents of the Social Rights Pillar. She’s been talking about it here. As you read through these press releases, it does become clearer that Ms Thyssen and Claude Juncker and others in Brussels are serious about building in stronger social infrastructure for fairness in employment, social security etc. Junckers spoke it recently:

In his most recent State of the Union address, on 13 September 2017, the President confirmed the Commission’s commitment to move forward with the Pillar as an essential means to create a deeper, fairer and more social internal market: “If we want to avoid social fragmentation and social dumping in Europe, then Member States should agree on the European Pillar of Social Rights as soon as possible and at the latest at the Gothenburg summit in November. National social systems will still remain diverse and separate for a long time. But at the very least, we should work for a European Social Standards Union in which we have a common understanding of what is socially fair. Europe cannot work if it shuns workers.”

This perhaps does approach the statement on the meme poster. Still no mention of doubling the UK’s state pension but certainly mention of a “social union” and a European wide set of standards to aim for. Even if MJunckers also recognised that individual countries would continue with diverse systems for a long time.

I thought the North East was sorted ? I mean NISSAN has been bunged cash so everything is fine isn't it? Letters unanswered......news for this guy JOHNSON DOESN'T CARE...... he got their votes and scuttled off

sticking plaster to cover a gaping wound that Johnson and his cabal have just ignored - up to 100k drivers short and they propose up to 2k service personnel to cover it up - wonder how many of those 2k with HGV qualifications are abroad on deployment?

An oven ready deal shouldn't need emergency powers that then have to be made permanent - oven ready says everything was already baked in if you'll pardon mixed metaphors - this is how shit its starting to get

Just like he treats his women.
Fuck ‘em then ignore ‘em.
Ooops , just realised that’s how he treats the whole country.

Yeah - well all those new Blue Wall Tory MP's arseholes are stating to twitch up here as they see what he is doing. They thought they had a seat on the gravy train which may well be short lived especially if they go to the polls early.
Rumours that Sunak is positioning himself for a leadership bid - other favourite runners and riders like Gove and Rees-Smug have been out of sight since before the recess. Even Javid is thought to be eyeing things up.

Labour are closing in on the party in the polls - Johnsons poll rating with party members and with the public in general is vanishingly small - the Tory Party want power and the clown giving it away will not be tolerated for long.
