As an antidote to the earlier dismal fayre I just watched an episode of Yes Prime Minister and then The Thick Of It on iPlayer and am watching Citizen Smith on Forces TV and I have to say over the years British TV have done Political Satire very well - I'd add in The New Statesman and HIGNFY to that grouping - you always watch it thinking politics can't possibly like that it wouldn't function then as the prog rolls on you realise its exactly as being portrayed and thats why it doesn't function !!

I think the problem is mate, politics has become satire, how can you be satirical about the current lot of numpties when they are satire incarnate.

I love Last Week Tonight in America, but the UK doesn't have any of those well-researched shows. To the extent that we have political satire, it's just comedians sitting around making jokes about what happened that week, from a position of having no greater insight than the viewer. Occasionally Ian Hislop will do something brilliant on HIGNFY, but it doesn't happen often enough. Good satire should teach you something as well as making you laugh.

The last really good British one was this:

I was thinking Bremner, Bird and Fortune deserved a mention. Excellent stuff.
Once shared a taxi ride into a Nottingham with Rory Bremner and a couple of girls I had in tow, totally by accident, after he’d been the guest speaker at the cricketer Jason Galleon’s benefit dinner at the East Midlands Conference Centre. Taxis were thin on the ground and we all agreed to share.

He spent the whole journey into Nottingham, totally unprompted by us , doing impressions. He wasn’t himself for a single second, except when he got out at his hotel and said goodnight. Totally weird, albeit funny, experience. His David Blunkett was especially funny.

I wonder if @Prestwich_Blue has any funny Bremner anecdotes to share...

I see a lot of Piers Fletcher-Dervish in Hancock

Sounds like a fun journey, with a bonus point for the name drop!

And Gallian, surely.

Naturally I do. I was working for an IT consultancy and we had a big annual bash, at which he was the cabaret. He was utterly shite.

Not sure that classes as "funny" mind you.
