Post Match Thread: City vs Everton

When I saw the lineup, I assumed we were going for a traditional 433. Sky had us in 4231 with Stelring on the right (no point listening to them then.) So the match starts and - forgive me if I'm wrong - but it seemed like an almost flat midfield three, with Yaya as high no.6,whilst Dinho ad Delph played as very wide no. 8s. Silva, Sterling and Aguero were given very fluid roles and allowed to float about. Very weird, but Pellegrini is often slated for not being inventive so whatever, let's go.

It wasn't a great experiment, to be honest. More pressure was on our fullbacks to create width, so they were caught often in transition. Delph and Dinho seemed to be everywhere at once, and the midfield lacked structure. Yaya often bypassed on counters. Build up play on our flanks was lacking structure, making it easy for Everton to defend our attacks from the wing, and our biggest threat appeared to be around the edge of the box.

To go in at half time at 1-1 was not unfair, though... Lukaku made his physical advantage count in his 90 minute duel with Otamendi, but still, they only managed one or two chances. We dominated the game (at home chasing an aggregate, we are expected to) and we deserved a little luck after the last two Everton games this month.

Second half change everything. Navas came on and Sterling went wide and stayed wide. Our attacking and defensive structure looked better instantly. In every third of our build up play, Navas was occupying Baines, manipulating their back line, giving Sterling more space and threat on the other side... not that Sterling's flank mattered - it was all about Navas on the right, at the beginning of this half. He was clean with his touch and pass, and we really started to give Everton problems.

Credit to Martinez for his subs around the 60 minute mark. He responded well to our changes and managed to settle his team down. Speaking of credit for subs - how about Pellers!? Silva in midfield by the end. Navas changing the game. De Bruyne taking the game by the scruff of the neck with a goal and assist. Magic Dave in CM (I've been wondering about him as a no.8 but not any of our current systems!)

All in all, wow, what an exiting game. I'm so glad to see our Sergio back to form. It feels like an eternity since he's been this good with zero signs of injury issues. Long may it continue because that man could win us a Champs League, he is literally that good. An interesting experiment 1st half - glad it didn't bite us in the arse.. Great tactical changes. Duels all over the park. And no doubt that the national press were fuming that we denied them an all-Merseyide derby to write about hahahaha.

My friend predicted 3-1 City and I said, "What, and Everton score first, typical city." Well, we don't things easy!

My take on the De Bruyne goal from Sterling's cross is simply this. As you know one or two of our goals v Swansea the other week were off-side but the ref allowed them. My view is you can't expect 100% of every decision to be got right by the referee. Sometimes they can't be in exactly the spot needed or if they are they can't guarantee to have an obstructed view every time. Even ref's (and yes I do include Ke**n F*i*nd who has made some stinkers against us) are human. Even they are fallible. Some don't go for you. But others will. It all evens itself out.

I bet they wouldn't complain if a cross to Barkley or Kone had gone out.

Every 'goal' should be screened before it is allowed. It would cut out our second and a couple of yours, but we wouldn't get a screening of the Navas pen, nor the Sterling pen and we wouldn't have a re-run of the foul on Aguero before Barkley scored. Even with screening we might have Howie Redshirt in the shed with the monitor and he'll come out with his usually low percentage of getting things right. The more you fiddle with things the more Pandora's boxes get opened, but the games needs some vision which the present 'governors' are unable to provide.

Perfect summary that.

Peller's did try this at Goodison in the cup without Silva . I would think he was trying to counter act Martinez playing with 3 at the back with the full backs tucking in to bolster their midfield.

Hats off to our manager last night he got it right on the night and we were deserved winners.

Being as it's hardly been mentioned. I was in 119 tonight and at least 2 toffees in 121 gave it the biggun when they scored, jumping up and down "get in there" at top note with a double armed salute to the toffee hordes above. He got given the verbals but wouldn't let it lie. Someone gave him a dig and the stewards intimated he should perhaps leave. His mate shoved him upwards on the stairs but he was still gobbing off so got another (to a loud cheer). Now although human this prick must have had the IQ of a carrott as he continued with running his mouth so next step up another dig (cheer again), then another on the next step each dig by somebody else. I counted 7 before he got the message and Fucked off with stewards in hot pursuit. Now I don't necessarily condone violence but this nob was asking for it and duly got it. The digs were not proper smacks either just little forget me not to take home from his visit. No other problems the whole game. Hardly the Goth hordes we were promised.

Yeah, saw that mate and to my shame I must admit it looked really funny from 116, a kind of human pinball, which seemed to go on for ages.

We had a single scouser behind us at the front of 116, who decided, when Everton won an early corner, to start singing at full pelt. He was obviously told the error of his ways and was politely advised it maybe better if he watched the match without uttering another word. "I paid me ticket la, I'll sing when I fucking want to" was perhaps not the best attitude to adopt, the rest is history..

I must have gone to a different game last night as i heard them sing their only song about 3 times during the match (how can a football team only have 1 song ? lol ) and thought they were proper shit for the amount of fans there and as for outside near the coaches what a load of fcuking nonsense grow up you twats ... you and your team got what you deserved ..... fcuk all .... :-)

I don't know if it was because I was underneath them but I thought they were beyond terrible. Hardly heard anything all game. I expected that they might have had more hunger for it than us and their large following might have carried them through but I genuinely kept forgetting they were there.

Edgy first-half, showed all our nous and experience in the second.

Clichy and Zabba were outstanding as the game wore on.

Biggest picture of the night was the end of an era, possibly even an acceptance from Yaya?

He knows we can still get over the line without him and he seemed to have a smile on his face sat on the steps of the bench.

How much was Dele Alli again?

Yep, noticed that too. None of the toys out of the pram that'd you'd expect. He looked like the old wise fella who has an epiphany, realises his days are basically nearly behind him, and then casually strolls off into the sunset.... He'll be passing on the torch soon and hopefully he has the humility to do that because he's rightly a club legend.
