Pre-season

Summer friendlies (Thomas Cook Cup etc) used to be a great way of getting kids into the Etihad/Maine Road for their first ever match - also the Man City XIs games against non league teams like Hyde, Droylsden let kids feel part of the club too and gave the small local clubs some income even though an XI side was normally one fringe player and some under 21s.

I liked it when we played a few lower league local rivals Bury etc... but as some have said North America and Asia are now the priorities.

We don't seem to value preseason in footballing terms anymore. The club sees it solely as a marketing exercise, and seems to favor three or four high-profile moneymaking games packed into a grueling travel schedule rather than a string of games against a variety of opposition that might, you know, actually help prepare the team for the season? It's bizarre. Can't be good for our chances.

For comparison this is Brighton's pre-season schedule

Sat 22nd July- Crawley Town (A) 3pm
Tue 25th July- Southend United (A) 7.45pm
Sat 29th July- Norwich City (A) 3pm
Tue 1st August- Away friendly in Europe
Sun 6th August- Home friendly at the Amex

They have one more game than us but the first two are with respect 'pub games'.

This would be all well and good if we went out to show the world how good we can be. I dont believe we`ve ever taken these games seriously enough and are only used to get game-time into legs.

You have to remember that for us to be at the top we need a lot of additional revenue and hence marketing is an important strategy to generate this. The players will get hrs in their legs and some better opposition. As long as they're home in good time - no problem for me
