PL announce academy reform - Academy system set for overhaul

Premier League chiefs have revealed a radical plan to reform youth football as they target a dramatic improvement in the quality of the England team.

Under the plan, top-flight academies will be told to provide 15 to 20 hours of coaching for their nine to 16-year-olds instead of the current five hours.

The huge increase in hours would bring young players more in line with those in countries such as Holland, and academies will have to work with schools and open during summer holidays to accommodate the rise.

It follows a review by Ged Roddy, the Premier League's director of youth development who has spent months comparing youth systems in Spain, Holland and Germany and in other sports such as swimming and cycling.

Great news for England and the league imo. (sorry if already posted)

Definitely. Needed to be done because it seems that those ages are development years that young English players are missing out in comparison to other countries.

A great thing they could do in english football is for players from every age group from U-12 all they way up to U-19 and have the old summer tournaments with wales, scotland and N.ireland again. Also before these mini-tournaments have a two week training camp. This would get the players used to playing with each other from an early age. The benefits of this can be seen with spain.

Also whats the planned use of this national football centre being built??

this comes from the 1000 hours a year of top notch coaching to make an olympic standard or (world class) athlete, swimmer, footballer etc

a study has shown for kids with the potential to make it to the top of there chosen sport be it swimming, athletics, football or whatever they need 10,000 hours of top not coaching over a 10 year period to become the best they can and fulfil there potential

for city to produce the best players they can they obviously need to source the raw talent from an early age and if possible school them

so basically have a school full of these kids where they do studies in the morning and then train during the afternoon hence the training hours would be met easily

i know the rags have looked into this and have based there study on cheethams school of music were the talented musicians are schooled and it is only the finance that is stopping them from doing this,

something city may not have a problem with so the way forward is

Manchester City School for the Talented Footballer (watch this space)

The Sheikh setting up a school has been a rumour for a while. Not only for local kids but also so City can sign lads from all over the country which under current legislation.

Pffft!

Knee...Jerk...Reaction.....

Imo the road to England success is through innovation not copying what other countries have done..... they should learn, adapt and improve...

They should get some of the people from the British Olympic team in, look at our performance in the last Olympics and more recently the European championships...they clearly know what makes world class athletes winners at the highest level....

This is a good step forward for football over here but the ultimate solution would be Private Education - with City basically having their own grammar school except scrapping the pointless sports such as Javelin Throwing and The school sports day where Everyone is a Winner
and constantly teaching Football in the curriculum.

The other introduction should be the dissalowment of Clubs fielding no English players, such as Arsenal... and include a set number of English players in their starting squad, if that means on the bench then its better than not being.

England will be a disappointment for years to come yet, the last thing we need is 9 yr old's 'being coached' - no-one should be able to have an academy side until 15 yr old IMO, they should be left to dick about with the ball however they like then go for trials at 15 (as they do in Brazil).

p.s you can't coach NATURAL SKILL, you either have it or don't.

The FA need to get coaches out into the community and coach kids at junior clubs leaving them there with their mates to play until around 15 at least. They need to improve pitches (3/4 size for under 14's) instead of leaving 10 year old boys to play on full size pitches. Loads of acadamies are full to the brim with African kids and not one has made his Premier league debut yet.
