The players clearly aren't good enough, but he is also trying to make them play in a way similar to the top level teams.

As a result, they are good at keeping the ball, but lack quality in the final 3rd the top teams have, but the top teams are most vulnerable to the counter, and they also lack the quality to sufficiently snuff these out.

Kompany is seemingly sticking to his principles for how he wants to play, regardless of whether the players are capable of it.
