You need twisting or side to side movement to damage the ACL.

I was surprised by the idea that this was some harsh modern interpretation, he's got his arm up to make himself bigger. Feels like a stonewaller in old money and people have invented rules about "close to the ball" to talk themselves out of it.

I do t agree, handball used to be given when players made a deliberate play towards the ball, not one that’s hit them from close range.
