16/09 UPDATE: A change in the The Premier League rules for determining league position has been announced. Sadly different newspapers (e.g. Daily Mail) report this rule change differently. The consensus of news in the media is that league position at the end of the 2019/20 season will be determined by (in order): 1. Points. 2. Goal difference. 3. Goals scored. 4. Head-to-head record (with away goals counting double in the event of a tie). 5. The result of a play-off game. Point 4 is new and makes the chance of a play-off game at the end of the season less likely. This rule change will be confirmed when the Premier League Handbook for 2019/20 is published.
