This is why Rascal isn’t on ignore for me despite some monstrous disagreements we’ve had when I’ve acted more the frustrated douche bag than he. He’s unapologetic in his politics and offers a similar “both sides suck” perspective which I disagree with but he’s 1) consistent, 2) admits to cognitive dissonance in practice when his ideals can’t be pragmatically applied and 3) recognizes the distinction between American politics and UK/other politics which necessarily alters perspective for both me and him.

He also doesn’t insult my parental abilities, what I do for a living, where I live, etc. etc.
 
What a sigh of relief that that sociopath has fucked off back to Florida. I watched the inauguration the other evening and it was like a weight being lifted. I thought Biden's speech was good, and covered all the challenges that need to be addressed. Bloody hell its some list though. Bringing the country together, the media, COVID, climate change, the economic challenges.....
I don't profess to know enough about Biden to say how good or bad he will be but at the moment I am pleased that he isn't Trump and acts and talks in a way that is appropriate to the dignity of his office.

How the election was close remains a mystery to me. One that hasn't been resolved by browsing this thread. Is there a killer post somewhere on here that comes closest to explain Trumps ongoing support?

White supremists and right wing nutters , he whipped them up , openly racist from the start , turns out there is a lot of them , add the ones who wanted a non politican to stick it to washington , the ones who brought his lies about everything and that is my guess

The simplest way I can put it as an outsider is that he fed people’s insecurities, jealousy and hatred especially to the disaffected and poorly educated in the country. Happy to be corrected by anyone with a better understanding though.

I believe it’s simpler — most Republicans are always going to vote for a Republican. Most Democrats are always going to vote for a Democrat. It’s the Independent middle that swings elections, and he lost a majority of them this time around.

Dislike for him drove Democratic turnout for Biden and dampened Republican turnout same as dislike for Clinton drove Republican turnout for Trump in 2016 and dampened Democratic turnout. In 2016, Democrats were complacent because many expected HRC to win in a walk. This time around, they weren’t.
