President Joe Biden

White supremists and right wing nutters , he whipped them up , openly racist from the start , turns out there is a lot of them , add the ones who wanted a non politican to stick it to washington , the ones who brought his lies about everything and that is my guess
I refuse to believe that there are 74m white supremacists or right wing nutters in the USA. There may be a minority faction but surely not enough to explain his lasting popularity. I can get that many would vote GOP irrespective of the candidate but in the unique circumstances and given his handling of the COVID crisis you would have thought that all but the die hard would have seen through him.

Out of interest, in a country of 300m people, how many people do you think are below mean average intelligence?

But Fog on the previous page gives a good account of 2016/20 in terms of voters.

I believe it’s simpler — most Republicans are always going to vote for a Republican. Most Democrats are always going to vote for a Democrat. It’s the Independent middle that swings elections, and he lost a majority of them this time around.

Dislike for him drove Democratic turnout for Biden and dampened Republican turnout same as dislike for Clinton drove Republican turnout for Trump in 2016 and dampened Democratic turnout. In 2016, Democrats were complacent because many expected HRC to win in a walk. This time around, they weren’t.

Dampened it in the key swing states I presume given he received more votes than in 2016.

Still what you’ve said is probably a fair summary of cause and effect - perhaps one legacy he Trump can be given credit for is reducing voter lethargy.

100m - 150m I suppose. I guess its similar to over here. If you have lies and untruths poured into your ear constantly by politicians and media you will get some that follow blindly. I will have a look at the post you mention.

His core voters see the world from their own narrow perspective for sure but I’m not sure that automatically makes them less intelligent anymore than those who voted for brexit were.

Narrow minded is probably fair

That is a simple analysis - it may be right. His behaviour has been just so outrageous that you would have expected a greater swing after 4 years. Are there positives that are put forward for his term in office?

What a sigh of relief that that sociopath has fucked off back to Florida. I watched the inauguration the other evening and it was like a weight being lifted. I thought Biden's speech was good, and covered all the challenges that need to be addressed. Bloody hell its some list though. Bringing the country together, the media, COVID, climate change, the economic challenges.....
I don't profess to know enough about Biden to say how good or bad he will be but at the moment I am pleased that he isn't Trump and acts and talks in a way that is appropriate to the dignity of his office.

God bless America and those that sail under her colours.

How the election was close remains a mystery to me. One that hasn't been resolved by browsing this thread. Is there a killer post somewhere on here that comes closest to explain Trumps ongoing support?
Zappa;
I am the slime.
You’re mind is totally controlled.
It has been stuffed into our mold.
And you will do what you are told.
Until the rights to you are sold.

It’s a cult maintained by social media now, not just TV.

Sure — corporate tax rate, tough on China, buy American, fuck off extraneous involvement in other nations’ affairs — plenty of “business” reasons. And then there’s the “he speaks his mind” crowd; the “he’s not a politician” crowd; the “he loves guns and the flag” crowd. I mean this is all bullshit and ignores the negative consequences of his foci but I know plenty of otherwise smart people who supported him in 16 (but FAR fewer in 20).

But there’s also the dynamic that straight white male liberals are perceived as “weak” by straight white, male conservatives, who also perceive themselves as “strong”. SWMCs expect non-white, non-male and non-straight folks to vote for Democrats, but assume their friends, family, colleagues — their circle — is “strong”, and will vote Republican. It’s a given. That’s inherent and candidate-neutral. They are voting strictly party not person.
