With due respect - and with full recognition acquittal was the very likely outcome of impeaching Trump for the 2nd time - impeachment was absolutely the right thing to do.I'm not really bothered / interested with the Biden thing. He's clearly a more sane and moderate option than what went before. You do make a valid point, that currently those that most wanted rid of Trump are the ones keeping him in the media spotlight. I've said all along that it'd be better to let him fade away and die in obscurity rather than create a martyr to the cult of his followers. Instead he is being perpetuated by the cult of righteous vengeance (sorry I mean justice). To those still keeping him relevant - trump and qanon salute you, they couldn't do it without your help.
I see what you are saying, but the most powerful thing Biden can do to erase trumpism is sort the pandemic responce and get the economy back on track. I think there's a good reason he's pretty much kept the whole impeachment thing at arms length and not got involved. He's showing statesmanship in the midst of an infantile situation, and frankly probably has more important stuff to do.With due respect - and with full recognition acquittal was the very likely outcome of impeaching Trump for the 2nd time - impeachment was absolutely the right thing to do.
The very powerful video produced by the prosecution was vital - to make absolutely clear just how close members of congress came to death by the mob incited by Trump; I think, however, that it was a mistake not to call witnesses. Trump refused to call in the National Guard and moreover was delighted by the invasion of the Capitol. Witnesses could have testified to this, under oath.
Would such testimony have altered the outcome - no, I think not. Too many Republicans are political animals - doing whatever seems expedient to remain in power. Given Trump's enormous popularity among his base, voting for impeachment is likely a political death sentence for most Republicans taking this stance.
Yet... more and more swing voters and indeed some few Republicans are disgusted by Trump's behavior. The impeachment proceedings are a powerful reminder to how very, very evil Trump is - both to the democratic base who will be motivated in the future to oppose the current republican party in upcoming elections - as well as incentive to those on the fence - to reject Trumpism.
Biden will leave it to his AG and not get involved. I doubt Biden will say another word about it.I see what you are saying, but the most powerful thing Biden can do to erase trumpism is sort the pandemic responce and get the economy back on track. Trump and his accomplices /enablers shouldn't be and won't be let off the hook. There was nothing infantile about the impeachment other than Trump's lawyers' response and the GOP vote to acquit but that can't be blamed on the new administration.
It will. Biden is the perfect President for the moment.I think this will be how he plays it too.
He's stated that no-one is above the law (I think); he's suspended a dep. press sec (who subsequently resigned) for misconduct.
I hope it continues like that.
