Quite the opposite. "I have a nice car, but it's old so I'll put this plate on so the neighbours don't know how old it is and think I'm wealthy."
Meanwhile the neighbours will probably waste money and natural resources replacing cars every 2 or 3 years just to keep up with the Joneses.

Even better, or more cringeworthy, is when they chip the engine so that it can get to red lights quicker than the rest of the cars around them. And when they put a private plate on a needlessy chipped car that can only go as fast as the car in front, you know you are dealing with a truly insecure type.
