Progressive Rock

Sorry to awaken (no pun intended) the beast that is the progressive rock thread.

I’m making the Christmas list and am looking for some new prog to get into. I’ve heard good things about Anathema - interested to hear what scouse prog sounds like.

My taste is pretty much old school: Genesis, Yes, Tull, Marillion with Fish, Rush and a bit of IQ (Paul Mennel albums). Has anyone got into any modern prog I can try
If that's your taste I'd stick with classic prog, hundreds of bands from all over the world from the 70s.
I just can't get into modern prog at all. And yes I've tried.
Sounds like prog by numbers to me :)

Ooh, the word “new” in front of “prog” has completely floored me.

Big Big Train for me, I have a slight bias because I know one of their founder members, but they were among the headliners at the 2024 and 2025 prog Cruise to the Edge, and already booked for the 2026 cruise. Despite the tragic loss of David Longdon, and some band members forced to leave for financial reasons during lockdown, they have regrouped and delivered in spades. Try listening to their album “Ingenious Devices”, then The Underfall Yard, English Electric parts 1 and 2. Some great prog, reminiscent of the prog haydays. If they had done this stuff fifty years ago, they would be as big as Genesis or Yes ever were.

Only given BBT a cursory listen and the bits I have heard sound quite pastoral.
I shall give them more time as they seem to be highly regarded.
