I have a PS3 and want to play online so purchased a wireless router, but I cannot get it to work so I cannot play online. I think it's all plugged in properly and the PS3 recognises the router (100% signal with or without ethernet cable), and I've tried changing the name of the router and it's IP number, but neither have worked.

I am not technically minded so I've exhausted all the possibilities I can think of, and frankly I am close to launching the router out of the window. I would gladly pay someone/lob a couple of quid to their nominated charity to come round and sort it out, as so many people seem to think that setting it up is easy.

Any help greatly appreciated, cheers.

Hi mate,

The likely cause is that you need to enter a security (WEP/WPA) key into the PS3 that is set up on the router that stops the neighbours using your internet access. This is usually on the router itself, or part of the documentation that was sent with the router if this was provided by your internet provider (SKY/Talk Talk etc).

The key is case sensitive, so once you have found it if there are capital letters in it, you need to enter capitals when putting the code into the PS3. Lower case, enter lower case. Then see if it connects and that you get a valid address (192.168.*.* or 10.0.*.* usually). You shouldn't have to be putting in IP addresses, they are usually assigned to the wireless device (your PS3) automatically by the router (a method called DHCP). I've not set up a PS3 wireless so don't know where you would put the WEP/WPA key in, probably through the front menu when you turn it on (settings or something like that). Give it a whirl and see how you go. If you get stuck, write back with what happens. If you are around the south manchester area i could pop round but i can't drive so would be buses/trains.

Have a look at the below vid, just found it and explains how to set it up really well!

Does the ps3 get online with wired connection and does anything else (wired or wireless) connect ok through the same router?

tried again, nothing

PS3 doesn't work with or without ethernet cable linked up to router even though it claims to receive 100% signal with or without ethernet connection

PC seems to work quicker when the router is switched on and it shows up as connected when you go to "show all connections" and the ethernet cable is connected

the only thing i can think of is, before i bought the router i own (which made by tp-link) i tried to set up another router which i'd acquired (which was made by realtek). the tp-link router claims it is made by realtek for the purpose of "show all connections", but my PC won't let me delete the connection and re-establish it as the tp-link connection, nor will it let me add the tp-link router as a seperate connection

i am not at all sure what my WEP key is - i have tried a couple of things which i think might be it, but they haven't worked

so there. once again, any assistance greatly appreciated

Not sure why your PS3 is not working via an Ethernet cable being directly connected to it, there is no reason why a direct link to the internet can not be established using this method?

Anyway a process of elimination is required here I am afraid, starting with your router, firstly log in to your router using 192.168.1.1 if you have not changed your router username and password they should both be “admin”

On the first page find the section “wireless “ and click on and enter ,now you should be presented with “SSID” this is the name of your wireless security network write it down on a piece of paper exactly as it is, IT IS CASE SENSITIVE.

On the same page further down, you should be presented with a number of options ignore them for now and look for the one that says security type, you should be presented with

WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
WEP
WPA/WPA2

NOTE WHICH ONE IS IN OPERATION IT IS EXREMLEY IMPORTANT.

On security option select “AUTOMATIC”
Encryption “AUTOMATIC”

IF THE SECURITY YOU ARE USING IS “WPA-PSK/PSK?WPA-PSK2” THEN YOU NEED A UN IQUE PASSPHRASE.

IF THERE IS ALREADY ONE IN THE BOX TITLED “ PSK PASSPHRASE”,WRITE IT DOWN WORD FOR WORD EXACTLY IT IS CASE SENSITIVE.

FOR NOW LOG OUT OF THE ROUTER

Back to your PS3 and try again, you now should know the right security so tell the PS3 by typing in the correct one,and letting it know your pass phrase if there is one by typing in the exact same passphrase careful not to put it in “caps lock if it was not “ and vice versa.

Let me know how you go on

And I will move on from here

Another direct way of checking your router is working at all is to log to your router again it should be 192.168.1.1 log on to the page “wireless “,on the box which should be “enable wireless security” ,untick it (temporarily),this means you now have a wireless network with no security, SAVE the change (for now ),log out.

Now try and connect the PS3 to your insecure wireless network you should now only have to enter the name of your SSID (wireless network) and be connected, nothing happening here, either means your router is incompatible or faulty, or your PS3 is faulty

If it connects let me know and I will help you set up a secure wireless network via private message :-)

The default WEP key should be in the router manual although you should change it anyway in fact I'd suggest using TKIP instead of WEP.

First I'd figure out why it wont connect through a cable, if you connect it to the router and set it for a wired connection, at which point does the connection test fail?

Does the Ethernet port on the PS3 have the indicator lights? Should have 2 corner lights that flash green/orange to indicate activity. If not, try the following things: -

- Different port on the router.
- Different ethernet cable.
- Turn the router off and on.
- There may be a network card reset for the PS3 but i don't have one so not sure.
