I lived in 13 different pubs around Manchester whilst growing up in the late 70,s early 80,s. all in proper working class areas like Levenshulme, Longsight , Ardwick and Wythenshawe.

Pubs have changed so much now tho and so many are closing down for a multitude of reasons.

I was just thinking today what i miss about the "old" pubs that just isn't there anymore.

A few things sprung to mind including 5.30pm opening( Pubs used to shut at 3pm before 24 hour drinking came in), there was always a few workmen finished for the day in their scruffed up work gear gagging for a few pints.
I also miss the banter that you could have without someone wanting to stab you or smash a bottle over your head(not saying that it was always violence free but it was not as bad as now)

Anyone else miss those PUBS?

To be honest i know where your coming from but if you look around the pubs you describe still exist.

In lot less numbers, yes there are some still.

Not as friendly as they used to be tho, wouldn't you agree?

An old ham barmcake with a token piece of lettuce wrapped in clingfilm and displayed in a plastic case at the end of the bar.
How I miss traditonal pub food

Anyone remember that bloke who went round all the bars in town shouting
"SEAFOOD Y'ALL!!" at the top of his voice?

Yes!

Good thread this. The best pub EVER in town was the Top Cat Tavern near the Corn Exchange. Every single person in there was either a wino, a 'character' or erm, me! For instance, one day the 'Phantom Raspberry Blower' was in one corner, pissed up, blowing raspberries to all and sundry whilst a completely arseholed tramp was slumped in another corner shouting out ''dead bodies, Blondie'' every so often to the barmaid. They were just two of the clientele, the others being a motley bunch of toothless tattooed hags, pissed up DSS drop-outs, bag ladies and assorted smelly bastards. It was top in the Top Cat!

That's brilliant mate, I'd completely forgotten about the TopCat, that was a bit special. That Raspberry blower bloke was legendary.
It made "The middle Yates's" look like The Living Room. They used to get a similar crowd in The JW Lees pub stuck on the side of the Arndale but I didn't like that boozer though, it was like drinking on a ferry.

Ah, the JW Lees pub. Remember it well. You're right about making the middle Yates's seem like the Living Room too! Have you been in The City or The King recently? The women in there have all their tattoos spelt incorrectly!

I used to play guitar in a band, when I was 18, that was the 'resident' band in the Cheshire Cheese on Rochdale Road during the mid 80's. Every night was fight night in there! We were regularly having to play through women scrapping on the 'dance floor' infront of the stage. It was run by Frank Platt and he had big connections with the Quality Street Gang and he used to take us into all these dodgy pubs full of these dodgy people. The Ram in Collyhurst was a particular no-go area - well it was when we played there ...... to a crowd of two! :)

Happy happy days. Long live the traditional pub!

Even so, your pubs are so much better than ours.
Most of them little pubs now have thirty pokies, twenty plasma screens, and uncomfortable chairs. Totally devoid of atmosphere.
