Question Time

Yes. Sing Fein never attended the HoC when elected.

The MP‘s party might step in and that potentially could lead to a suspension. Anything over 10 days triggers a by-election. Not sure that’s ever happened though.

Their constituents could force a recall of their MP triggering a by-election too.
It’s disgraceful, in my mind, to be paying people for not doing their job. Yes I’m naïve, as I’ve already said. But my philosophy has always been a fair days pay for a fair days work. Not an overpaid person who doesn’t bother turning up and even ‘boasts’ about it.

I guess they could still be an excellent local MP if they were able to help people without having to go to the commons.

It must be very rare though.

Google and other search engines have not been my friend!
So I ask the question here: If an elected MP chooses not to take up their seat in the Houses of Parliament can they still draw their pay?
Every time this comes up with Stormont, i always wonder if they’re actually being paid because none of them deserve a penny.

I don't think Sinn Fein MPs get paid.
They can claim expenses for various things, and the party get a certain amount (as does any political party with elected members, I think).

Wait until you hear about the Lords.

I was struck that a couple of times that the NI secretary and Benn both said "I don't know" or "I didn't understand" on different things.

I'd quite like to see more of that. I don't expect every minister to know everything about other areas - I don't really expect a minister to know absolutely everything about his own area as long as he's up to speed on matters in a place he's visiting or are contentious at the time.

If the media want to ask Shapps how many regiments there are on his second day, it's a ridiculous question that turns into memorising briefing notes.
