Now I pose this question to validate an argument I am having with a friend.

If you could earn £16,000 a year working in a job that you didn't enjoy or earn £10,000 cheating on the dole, which would you choose?

Forget about all other trivial factors, just take the question as it stands.

working because im not a lazy twat, nevermnd being on a perminate holiday i get bored when i take a fortnights holiday. Ive got to be active.

If it had to be a straight choice between those two then I'd go for the latter.

The key aspect is the 'not enjoying it' like you say Nashark. Had plenty of jobs in the past I hated and it effects your whole life and grinds you down.

Plus I dont think I'd be lazy on the dole. Reckon I'd keep active and maybe write a book or something which has always been a dream of mine.

But have to reiterate that this is purely within the strict parameters of your question.

Yep i dont really like the job i do now but ive done it for 6 years, ive had some proper shite jobs but id rather do those than sit on mi arse 24/7

You wouldnt have to Allan. I'm sure there are people out there on the dole who sit around all day. Or 'potter around' and think they are contributing to society when all they're really doing is the stuff the rest of us do when we finish work.
But there are lots of meaningful things you can do - within the legal restrictions of being on the dole - that can keep you busy.
I'm assuming Nashark's choice is not binding for a considerable time? Because if so then my answer would be different. I wouldnt want to spend a long time on the dole.
Then again I wouldnt want to spend a long time doing a job I hated either.

Fucking hell Nashark....can there be a third alternative? lol

You've got a better chance of getting a better job while your working than if youve done nothing for a year or two.

Definitely the job.

I know this for a fact because i did once spend a year working in a cotton mill for less than dole money after I'd paid bus fare.

With me, it's a pride thing. I've never signed on in my life and I'd rather stack shelves on the graveyard shift at Asda than do so now.

Yeah thats true Allan. And a better social life which leads to a better life all round.

When I first saw the question my mind went back to jobs I had a few years back that I truly hated -soul-crushing stuff - and the dole (with only a slightly less financial 'reward') option appeared by far the most appealing.

But whilst at those jobs I met some top people who I'm still mates with today.
And there were laughs to be had too which you certainly wouldnt get watching daytime telly.

Haha I've done the graveyard shifts at Morrisons. Boring but a good laugh if you're lucky to have mad workmates.

In my day to day work I am currently talking those on FND (flexible new deal) through what motivates people.

It is amazing how little we think we could live on but once you have had a period on a low wage the lack of self-esteem and self-worth is staggering to behold.

Also the fact that people on a low wage really see the benefits of having as little another £10per week as it is ALL disposable income.

Although we all work for only two main reasons 1) Money or 2) Love the whole idea of continued motivation becomes an amalgam of the two.

The work life balance is important as well of course because ask yourself what you would be willing to give up in order to do a job you love as opposed a job that pays well?

A drop of £6k may well mean no car for example or no holidays.

As we all exist in order to be close to family and friends the lack of options in regards these two things will also cause many to pause and think.

I would suggest that on such a low wage many people will unwisely say they would like the enjoyable job but dont realise how challenging it is to do more than survive on a week by week basis.

But thats just my POV
