Quickest route to St Andrews on the motorway?

Didn't post in transport forum as there's no one online and setting off in a few hours from prestwich.

Last year my sat nav took me a longer route. Anyone advise me on the quickest route possible as I know there's 2 routes and can't find out on the route finder.

Stick St Andrews in the box at the resolution displayed and you'll end up at the home of golf ;-)

Is your satnav route to carry on down the M6 to the M42 and then head north up the A45 to St Andrews? If so the reason is probably to avoid the rush hour traffic on the Expressway. Swings and roundabouts really.
