It depends doesn't it. If it's a £50m player plus wages and agent fees, then yes I think so. We are only going to make about 2 or 3 big signings per season anyway. Fair enough we might over pay by £15m over the course of a window but if we win the league then it's worth it. We can't expect to win the league or the Champions League if the best players are constantly snapped up by our rivals because they're less bothered about getting ripped off.Should we prepared to pay £5m more than all of our targets are worth just in case one of them comes good?
Also, we're not as big a draw as Barca, Real or Bayern so we might have to put up more money than them.
We aren't likely to win the Champions League playing our style of football anyway because sooner or later we will run into Bayern or Barcelona, who are better than us at it. We're not likely to grind out results like Chelsea or Atletico have so we either need to buy Barcelona or Bayern's players off them (which is impossible) or we have to identify the next generation of world class players and we have to snap them from under the noses of said clubs, so yeah we might still have to over pay.
It's ok taking the moral high ground as a club and saying that we don't need to overpay anymore. 95% of the time we don't, but at the top table, we still do. £50m deals indicate we as at the top table so we have to over pay in certain situations.
I've already said that I wouldn't do it for Sterling purely because I don't see the attraction to him, but we obviously want him enough, so what's the point in us posturing over £5m?
