Forgive me if there is a thread that covers this topic. I did search to no joy. But on stumbling over an auction house, I found Neil Young's medal is up for grabs. If this is genuine, surely City should be making this the next signing for the new season?! I was exoecting to see old kits, the odd game programme but not this on there.

Anyone have a look below and let me know your thoughts. As fans, do we have a duty to find hstoric pieces and bring them to the club's attention? They should belong to our history and heritage. Managed for future generations. Right?

MAN CITY CUP MEDAL 1969 FA Cup Winners medal awarded to Neil Young who scored the only goal in the 1969 FA Cup Final when Manchester City defeated Leicester City 1-0. Neil Young who has sadly passed was probably one of the best players of his era never to play for England and along with Bell, Lee and Summerbee he was a crucial part of the forward line that won the League, FA Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and League Cup. The medal is gold, hall-marked and inscribed "The Football Association Challenge Cup Winners N.J.Young M/c City FC" on the reverse side. Also included is a 1969 Cup Final postal cover signed by Neil Young. Good

This is what I want to see in a museum too:

MAN CITY 1923 GROUND OPENING Manchester City home programme v Sheffield United, 25/8/1923, also

MAN CITY 1923 GROUND OPENING Manchester City home programme v Sheffield United, 25/8/1923, also covers Reserves v Oldham 27/8/1923, opening game at the new Maine Road Stadium for Manchester City. Includes editorial about the new ground and the playing pitch. Folds, spine repair. Fair-generally good

His wife & widow should have it. I met her at a supporters gathering in Manchester (nearly 20 years ago now) and we kept in touch for a while, smashing lady who loved Neil madly so I can only guess that difficult times led her to part with it - unless she's passed on too. But if she's living it ought to be hers to keep and cherish.

The medal could go for north of 30-40k if there’s a bidding war. The fact he scored the one and only goal adds to the value. There’s currently a load of Joe Mercer stuff due to come under auction too, including medals he won as a player for Arsenal, as a manager for City and as a manager for England.
Terry McDermott must be skint - he’s selling all his medals, some gems in there too, he could and should easily make 200-300k on them.

I am so lucky to have this experience and memory......

Around 1974 as an 11 year old, this new kid joined my class at Lane End Primary School in Cheadle Hulme. His name was Mark and we became close friends in our early teenage years. It turned out that Mark was the son of the one and only Neil Young who I had watched as a Platt Lane season ticket holder toward the end of his career. I was in awe of the man, but felt so sorry for him, as by this time he had struggled down the lower leagues, eventually taking much lower paying jobs to make ends meet. The MUEN even had a journalist jump out of a hedge and take a picture of him as a milkman with an article about his downfall (pathetic). Hard to believe really, but Swales never gave him a testimonial, which to this day is a shameful. As a young shy teenager, I went fishing on numerous occasions with Mark, one of my other friends, and Neil, who would take us to ponds and lakes around Alderley Edge. He was a quiet guy and very likeable. I wish that I wasn't so shy and had asked him more about his time at City, but that's how it goes. I still have the memories that I treasure and remember just sitting there fishing sat next to a City great. Just felt that I should share this.

The story of Neil Young’s winners medal rings a bell. I maybe wrong but I seem to remember a story a few years ago about him hitting harder times and having to sell it. I suppose the buyer has put them back on the market. I definitely remember the issue about not having a testimonial, wasn’t there one done after Swales tenure?

Neil Young's book is an excellent read, he recalls how he hit rock bottom in his later years and was very bitter that he never got a testimonial game after he claimed he'd been promised one. Happily, towards the end he seemed to have found inner peace.

Leaving that aside, he was a great servant to City, a very graceful player, witnessing great highs and lows in an extremely long career.

I totally agree. It is always a shame that family can't retain things of sentiment and historical value to themselves. With the money that modern football throws around, City should be capable of rehoming collections and ensuring those who earned them get to look at their pieces in their homes or at the club. Let the families choose. Sadly, the auction houses and sellers will always be winners.
