Can’t lie. I understand why he thinks this way. Pep is known to be the most systematic coach. Our system is very rigid and our players rarely take chances unless you’re KDB who actively refused to listen to Pep most times. We’re super slow, cautious and methodical. Cherki is a maverick. Magician that I think thrives with freedom. Who on this team has freedom. Pep isn’t an Achelotti who says “gives the ball to the best players and just let them do what they do best”. People with this mindset will use Grealish as their only example for saying Pep is restrictive.
On the other hand there’s literally a 90 min interview of Pep talking in Spanish about the importance of dribblers and how there’s no football without them. So yes he’s controlling but up to a point. In the final 3rd he’s said it himself that’s it’s up to the players. All he does is try set them up to be in the best positions and they predict what the opposition will do. That’s why Doku and Savio can still beat their man for fun. Sterling Mahrez Sane all thrived under Pep. Where is that argument for them. The best players come from him. So he’s either the best manager to ever walk the planet or he’s not. You have to pick a side. He’s not perfect but saying he limits players is unjustified. We just don’t treat the ball like a bomb. We don’t believe in many turnovers - a basketball match. We believe in rhythm .. extra passes. Our fav way to defend is with the ball. This is a philosophy. Talented players can still be in it. In fact the more talented the better. If you’re not skillfully blessed or have a great footballing IQ you will struggle. Like Phillips. All he cares about is players that are good people inside and hard workers.
At the end of the day. Media is to push agendas and that’s all people do. Same as the people on twitter. I’d take this video with a pinch of salt.
