Re: The north Stand

I always thought it faced towards Preston!

ouch!

-- Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:53 pm --

I've heard people call it the Hird-Brown, that was because of the name of the scoreboard manufacturers.

By using that logic, was the main stand facing a main rd?

Nice to see my work appreciated sir!!!!

It may have had it back to a Maine Road ;)

Edit: Hmmm..I see what you did there....waits for Platt Lane thread :(

Apparently the Platt Lane stand was named after our own David Platt's Great Grandfather married Elsie Lane of Booth Street, Sheffield. It was originally named the Platt/Lane Stand in honour of their union, but the slash was dropped in 1975.

It's where a load of blokes from oop North armed only with Black Puddings and Whippets fought off the Arapahos and the Cheyenne Indians lead by Crazy Horse.

Was anybody on here brought up in a household that could afford to sit in the Maine stand?

Didn't want to mate, full of pipe smoking, tea drinking fuddy duddies! I was a kippax kid! I could afford my entrance money, half a pie and half a drink.

I sat in the Maine stand once with my Dad (he must have been given a couple of freeebies) it was the Colin Bell comeback game. I was a Kippax kid myself, most of the time me and my mate would just go down and try to get in or sit up in the floodlights over by the North stand. Sat over in Platt lane next to the Kippax a few times as well.

-- Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:53 pm --

Me ! Me ! Me !
Started in 1967.

Around 68 for me mate (Kippax), was about five.

The North Stand was originally and officially called the Brass Monkey Stand due to the fact that there was no roof, later some wag started calling it the North Stand as it was said that standing there was like standing at the North Pole but of course calling it the North Pole Stand just sounded silly.

I don't think it has ever been called The north Stand though.

I started in the platt lane, moved round to the kippax and finished in the main stand.

H block was the heart and soul of Manchester city. I'm still surrounded by the same faces now
