Conservatively they have 5 or 6 top class players plus lots of decent backup.

Compared to our midfield (which is probably in better shape than our defense and attacking options):

de Jong (decent)
Fernandes (weak)
Hamann (retired)
Johnson (pissed)
Elano (erratic)
Etuhu (injured)
Ireland (class)
Petrov (injured)
Wright-Phillips (class)

We have 2 top class players in Sweep and Superman. 3 or 4 if you include Elano (assuming he's staying) and de Jong (unproven). Plus very little backup.

I am no rag (City fan for 42 years) but it's not happy reading is it. We desperately need to strengthen in all areas imho and I am very surprised we haven't been more active in this window.

I think the bar of transfer expectation as been raised so high. People like cook dont help the fans when he says their will be SUPRISES!

In reality the signings have been good, its a shame we didn't have any DD excitement.

Likewise, I hear what you are saying. But realistically their squad is miles ahead of ours isn't it.

Ronaldo, Fletcher, Carrick, Hargreaves, Park - all top class. Personally I would add Anderson and Nani as well. And then you have Scholes and Giggs coming in with cameo roles and far from past it.

If we are to compete at the top level we need a lot more depth.
