Tonight in the spurs game. Caulker the young defender who had already been booked pulled down an arsenal player in the penalty area and a penalty was given. Now it was my understanding that this was an automatic booking and therefore the player should have gone. Now it made no difference because arsenal went on to win.

But nothing was made of this at all by either commentator, so it seems to me like refs make the rules up as they go, they use the convenient get out clause of its the rules of the game when they make a decision that people question but then are allowed to just ignore a decision when it suits them.

So would people prefer that refs officiated a game completely to the rule book so there is no doubt but some decisions are seen as ridiculous are they reffed in the spirit of the game where every decision is called into question because its in the hands of the ref

It has to be to the law.

On Sunday at Chelsea, they were 4-0 up with seconds left and should have had a blatant penalty but ref didnt give it and seconds later blew the full time whistle. He knew it was a penalty as you could see him joking around with Drogba when Drogba asked why wasnt it. Ref propably thought 4-0 up , seconds left, doesnt matter but what if the title came down to goal difference and Chelsea lost out by 1.

Must be to the law

Rules are the rules. If they do not impose them they are not doing their job.

the law i hate most is when a player gets booked for celebrating a goal ffs

So do you think probert and the ref for the chelsea blackpool game will be reprimanded i doubt it!

So if the rags took 5 minutes to celebrate a goal against usand were wasting time and they weren't booked for it you wouldn't agree with this rule?

depends whether the ref added the 5 minutes wasted on. I doubt they would. I think the poster is referring to being booked for taking your shirt off or celebrating with you own fans!

Players should continue to be booked for these 'technical' offences but they should not be seen as on a par with outrageous tackles that only carry a yellow. And they should not be cumulative in getting a player sent off. They should be removed from the pitch if they reach a certain number and spend time in a Rugby-style sin bin. But FIFA won't allow themselves to learn from Rugby.

There are too many instances where referees allow themselves to make an assessment based on their understanding of the merits of the case. There will always be an enormous amount of judgement required because my idea of the tackle on Adam J was a penalty, Crappenberg thought not, but if he judges something to have happened then the laws quite clearly state that 'x' should or, in many cases, must follow. Too many refs vary this element of refereeing depending on who the recipients are. It stinks. Battenberg clearly knew it was a penalty and the second before the tackle he might just have looked at his watch and missed it (?) or he decided that Blackpool had suffered enough. Play is always extended to allow a penalty to be taken. He ballsed it up, knew he had, Drogba knew he had, as he did with Adam J, but CakeFace will argue through a six-inch plank that it wasn't.

the time issue wasnt my point, you can stop the clock when a goal is scored and then restart when they kick off again, im sorry i didnt specify, i meant when they take thier shirt off when they score , they get a yellow card which i think is pathetic

Perhaps your assumption that all penalties should result in a booking is incorrect.

We should have a 'You are the ref' section on the forum like they used to in the olden days in 'Shoot' magazine.

That should get a bit of debate going. Any refs out there willing to put their heads above the parapet?
