Ah, right - didn't think of that! As you were...

After seeing a replay on MOTD, Still don't think Sterlings was a penalty for me, having said that, it's most certainly not a dive. Silva's looked outside the box too.

Just watched it on MOTD and there is no question of offside. Presume Taylor was checking to see if it was in the box. Must admit I got it wrong though by saying he seemed reluctant to give the penalty. Watching it back he didn't hesitate anywhere near as much as I thought at the time.
This is something I don't get, surely it's either a foul or a dive and a yellow?
For me, the ball might have been running away from him but the fact is that he was actively taken out in the box so it got to be a penalty. It's not like they got their legs tangled or anything.
For me, not everything has to be one or the other. I don't believe every bit of contact has to be a foul. It absolutely wasn't a dive, and the ref got it wrong booking him, but for me, he'd lost the ball already and made sure he there was contact. I've seen them given on a regular basis but in my eyes those type of challenges shouldn't be penalties.
Sterling was tackled near the touchline later in the half - ref gave a free kick. If that was a foul then we should have had a penalty for the tackle inside the box.I'd find the Sterling decision easier to swallow if there was more consistency from the officials who seem to get worse every week.

Hmm, I've just posted a reply to Ric who said a pretty similar thing.
I agree that not all contact should be a foul, the one thing I loathe more than anything else is pundits defending players like Ashley Young or Paulo Dybala throwing them self about by saying "oh well, you can see there is a slight bit of contact."
And yes, I think Raheem played for it but, when you put in tackles like that, I think you need to make absolutely sure that you're going to get the ball. As I said in the other thread, if it happened anywhere else on the pitch and we weren't awarded a free kick, I'd be livid simply because he was knocked off his feet by a defender who put in a clumsy tackle.
Idk, maybe it's just me but I was already incensed by Martial's cringe attempt at winning a penalty earlier on, the referee not falling for it but not even having a word with him and then Bojan getting a yellow card for something much more debatable in the second half. Also, where was the Sunderland player's (can't remember who) yellow for simulation that the referee had acknowledged?
