Refs for Arsenal and Sunderland games.

After seeing a replay on MOTD, Still don't think Sterlings was a penalty for me, having said that, it's most certainly not a dive. Silva's looked outside the box too.

This is something I don't get, surely it's either a foul or a dive and a yellow?

For me, the ball might have been running away from him but the fact is that he was actively taken out in the box so it got to be a penalty. It's not like they got their legs tangled or anything.

He was looking If it was offside before giving the penalty Ali's Sterlings was a penalty also.

Just watched it on MOTD and there is no question of offside. Presume Taylor was checking to see if it was in the box. Must admit I got it wrong though by saying he seemed reluctant to give the penalty. Watching it back he didn't hesitate anywhere near as much as I thought at the time.

Yeah at the ground from the new stand watching the referee when silva was took down I saw him look straight away at the linemen the he blew his whistle pointed to the spot.

For me, not everything has to be one or the other. I don't believe every bit of contact has to be a foul. It absolutely wasn't a dive, and the ref got it wrong booking him, but for me, he'd lost the ball already and made sure he there was contact. I've seen them given on a regular basis but in my eyes those type of challenges shouldn't be penalties.

Hmm, I've just posted a reply to Ric who said a pretty similar thing.

I agree that not all contact should be a foul, the one thing I loathe more than anything else is pundits defending players like Ashley Young or Paulo Dybala throwing them self about by saying "oh well, you can see there is a slight bit of contact."

And yes, I think Raheem played for it but, when you put in tackles like that, I think you need to make absolutely sure that you're going to get the ball. As I said in the other thread, if it happened anywhere else on the pitch and we weren't awarded a free kick, I'd be livid simply because he was knocked off his feet by a defender who put in a clumsy tackle.

Idk, maybe it's just me but I was already incensed by Martial's cringe attempt at winning a penalty earlier on, the referee not falling for it but not even having a word with him and then Bojan getting a yellow card for something much more debatable in the second half. Also, where was the Sunderland player's (can't remember who) yellow for simulation that the referee had acknowledged?

I'd find the Sterling decision easier to swallow if there was more consistency from the officials who seem to get worse every week.

Sterling was tackled near the touchline later in the half - ref gave a free kick. If that was a foul then we should have had a penalty for the tackle inside the box.

You make very valid points, I've certainly seen them given, and i accept some people think that should be a penalty, i see why you think it's a penalty i just think in this instance he was looking for the contact before the challenge was made and that's ultimately worked against him. I actually think if he hadn't decided to look for contact and hesitate slightly he'd probably of been half a hard further forward and would of got completely taken out for a certain penalty. Maybe subconsciously that's why i don't think it was a penalty. I despise players trying to buy penalties and i think Sterling did that today and has done it a few times this season. Needs to cut it out of his game before he gets labelled for it.

you're spot on with the consistency issue. There shouldn't be different outcomes to similar tackles depending on where it occurred on the pitch but with the stakes so high it's something we have to accept unless something drastically changes in the rules such as a video ref in the stands so they can be more confident in their decisions. we're never going to see the level of consistency we all want to see for decisions like that under the current rules.
