Remembering True City Legend Bert Trautmann On His Birthday Today:

I was always Bert in goal as a lad. I shook his hand at the end of his testimonial, it was huge.

A bit ironic as last time we played Villarreal Bert was there and sat on the bench outside We played Villarreal again and its Berts birthday. Happy birthday to the big guy in the sky.

My favourite photo of Bert. After he broke his neck he had to put something on to cover his hair to stop the plaster sticking to his hair. He chose a City bobble hat.

There was an old players game Manchester v Merseyside at HT of the main City v rag or maybe Stoke? game and he stayed on the pitch and played the second half of the main game.

I was in the Platt lane as a kid and I vaguely remember him being sent off. I think he hoofed the ball out of the penalty area and it hit the ref in the back ??

I've seen many photos of that team but not seen this one before. Great picture. Bert was my first hero but Bobby's diving header in the Cup Final v. Newcastle made such an impression on me that for weeks afterwards I tried copying it in the street in front of our house. Must have used half a dozen tins of Germolene on my scraped-up knees!
