Remembering the Inflatable Banana craze / Stoke Boxing Day fancy dress party

Yep, 12,000 tickets. I watched the first half of Tamworth v Atherstone then jumped on the Leicester & Rugby mini-bus. They asked if I had a ticket, I said no. Got to the ground and found a cash turnstile, standing behind the goal.

Shit result but a fantastic day.
I travelled with Leics and Rugby that day ..I think,no trains that day so no idea how I got back to Notts after .
Probably in my 1st ever car ,a battered old blue Vauxhall chevette
Or as I used to call it..shovette..as it broke down so many times I had to get push starts everywhere..or even worse abandon it and walk home.

I remember being in the side Stand and feeling proud at how many Blues had turned out in force,in all manner of fancy dress.

I worked in the civil service at the time ,and had attended the office Xmas party dressed as a sheikh complete with head gear and a pair of shades. The intention was to go to the Victoria ground on boxing day dressed as an Arab but I didn't have the balls to carry it out..prob cos I would have looked a knob travelling down on my own to meet the supporter club...I took the Arab gear in a plastic bag, intending to get changed into it later in the day..it never happened,I was too shy/ embarrassed to carry it off, which is a shame given the future history of our club!

On arrival at my seat in the side Stand, I realised that tickets meant nothing today, there were blues in,my seat( free for all basically) so I had to make do with crouching down on the steps for the whole of the game.
As happened so often under Machin in those days ,we took the lead ..and then collapsed away from home as the home team grew in confidence and we buckled under pressure..

Typical City.

I think these things tend to get more exaggerated with time.

It was certainly a good turn out but the whole attendance was only 24,000. Pretty sure they had more than 9,000.
I broadly agree.. but in those days of cash turnstiles who really knows how many fans were in that ground that day ?

Many Blues I would suggest got in unofficially and there were loads in the side Stand on the steps or someone else's seat..Inc mine.

Loved this book so much when it came out. Must have read it 20 times!
Best bit is Peter Swales telling how he and his missus ate homemade sandwiches in the valley parade car park before the game!

Imagine walking to the Etihad and seeing Khaldoon and Sheikh Monsur eating banana and crisp butties in the back of a ford Granada!!
I bet he still put an expenses claim for his lunch
