Renting football grounds

Its actually Barry Hearn, ex owner of Leyton Orient and taxpayers.

I can understand orient being unhappy, you could hit their ground with a stone from the Olympic stadium tbf. The taxpayers should just be grateful spurs didn't get it.

Agreed but the deal still stinks to high heaven although West ham have no blame, they got a deal they probably couldn't believe whilst the LDDC have some serious answers to give.

It would have been better for the taxpayers if they had. At least they wouldn't be funding the running of the ground. I'm happy Spurs didn't get it, but it would have been a cheaper for the London taxpayers.

I'll admit I kow nothing of the details but I am always guided by the legal position. If an individual or entity has to be taken to court and forced to disclose the details would indicate the parties felt there was something they were ashamed of and felt they had to hide then its not that good. As Dodgy Dave found out you are probably best telling it all up front and taking it on the chin.

Not necessarily. If spurs had demolished the ground then money would have had to have been spent on a new athletics stadium and if the council use the stadium properly they could cover most of the costs. Plus, spurs are cunts.

How much would have that cost instead of the huge cost of conversion and the ongoing cost of the upkeep? I concur that Spurs are cunts.

In London? Probably looking at a 9 figure sum. At least this way they keep the stadium as an asset and they'll have use of it when west ham aren't playing at home. Unlike Manchester Council with Eastlands and unlike they would have had with spurs. The cunts.

And those other two London clubs Spurs and Arsenal I think they're called.

Since when have Arsenal been arsed about the Olympic stadium and Spurs moved on and are equally not arsed any more.

I reckon Spurs and Arsenal will be arsed when West Ham's ticket prices are half theirs because they don't have to pay for a new stadium so will end up attracting many of the next generation of London fans due to much better accessibility and affordability.

Eh? Not arsed one of their City rivals is about to become equally as strong as them. Come on

The thread is about the renting of the Olympic stadium and the ongoing row about it.

Arsenal have never been involved or arsed about it.

I agree Spurs are c**** but their proposal would have seen them pay for a complete refurbishment of the old Crystal Palace athletics stadium as part of the deal: a far better deal for Londoners.

I'm still glad they didn't get it though. The c****.

Arsenal fans not being arsed about someone else getting some kind of financial advantage? Yeah, that sounds like them. Easy going bunch that lot, especially when football finance is involved

Pretty sure this arrangement suits Tottenham just fine. Whilst this has all been going on they've been boxing off their own deal with Haringey council.

Anybody who owns their stadium seems to see renting as a) the inferior club or b) some sort of daylight robbery. They forget that the club loses out of any potential growth in value of the stadium or the land it's on, and often miss out on some of the revenues generated (not to mention not having full control of property).

They also forget that regardless of how a stadium came into existence and the associated costs of all that (i.e. Commonwealth, Olympics, World Cup etc) there comes a point at which there is an empty stadium that either needs to be occupied, or demolished (or the very unlikely option of repurposed somehow). At that point, demolition is often a political and PR disaster, which leaves stadium owners practically begging someone to occupy it. It's a buyer's market right there and then.

Arsenal chose to build their stadium, and good luck to them. They were in full control of their future and did a good job of things. Some other clubs have had an opportunity presented to them, and chosen to take that opportunity (rental). It's not always risk free as clubs forfeit their current stadium and risk losing a number of their fans in the process. It's an opportunity, not a guaranteed success.
However, in the case of white elephant stadia, you cannot blame a club for being fully aware of its upper hand in negotiations and securing a very good deal. Arsenal COULD have stayed at Highbury and decided to see if the future would bring them such an opportunity, but they probably thought that was far too unpredictable and unlikely, so built their own. Tough / good luck depending on your viewpoint.

Timing, opportunity and good fortune are simple facts of life. You win some, you lose some.

Good luck to West Ham I say, and if anybody's now moaning about the cost to the taxpayer, blame the Olympics in the first place, not West Ham.

Wenger never stopped bleating when we came into money let's wait and see.
