My lad has just got the game SPORE for his PC.

He gets a message saying the existing card is not up to spec.

Is it just a case of buying a more up to date one and replacing the

the old one ...Pull the old one out and put the new one in..... or is

it not as simple as that !

It can be, but likely it wont be.

I had major problems fitting a new G-Force 9600GT 3 months back.

Eventually had to get PC World to fit it for over 100 notes! (FFS). Even they had problems.....

Im not a techy, but make sure you at least check your power supply on your PC can handle the card your buying, or you'll need a new power supply too!

First off at the back off the game it will say right at the bottom of the case the specifications of the graphics card required, it usually has a few to choose write them down on a piece of paper, also check the processor is up to specification as well because there is no point buying a decent graphics card if your computer cant take the pace, if the processor is not good enough then I am afraid you need a new computer and you can forget about the graphics card.

To check your processor speed click on the the system tab on the control panel in windows.

If you pass that you now need a little look in your case to see if you can actually add a graphics card, unplugging EVERYTHING THAT IS attached to the case and everything that’s plugged in to the MAINS ELECTRICITY, make a little note of where everything goes back to before disconnecting :-)
.,
With everything unplugged take the two little screws out of the side panel on your case, where your monitor cable connects to your computer you should see a card behind it slotted in to an expansion bay, it will probably be secure with a little plastic clip to your mother board and a small screw to the case, unscrew the screw and release the clip it should now slot out the expansion slot.

Now this graphics card could be AGP or PCI EXPRESS, best to take the said card with you to Aria or Microdirect, with the piece of paper with the specifications of the one you need to play the game, ask the lad on customer services what type it is and advice on a budget card (cheapest available),hopefully they will sort you out.

Armed with the new card go home return it to the old cards slot, put the drivers in the CDRom and your son will be happy.

(I hope)

If I can be off any more assistance drop me a line and I will see if I can help.

There is a very small chance you might not be able to buy a card for your computer if it is a big name mass production computer, they have a vested interest in leaving you unable to upgrade, they would rather you buy brand new.

It is best to build your own system then maintenance is simple, something breaks then you can replace it easily, and you can upgrade when ever necessary it is not as hard as people think, I do build them occasionally for people, or just help them assemble one. Advising what is needed for there specific tasks.

Plus you save a few quid. One thing I wouldn't do though is go by the specs on the back of a game sleeve. The games may run but in low end there gonna be shite

Microdirect is a top place for pc stuff, pretty cheap aswell. Just let them know what you want(to run certain games etc) and they'll tell you what you need.
