Take a wild guess.......

They mentioned this on Keys and Gray earlier, and were obviously keen to emphasise that City were down in 17th place in terms of global shirt sales. However, the figure of 175,000 City shirts sold was a 5 year average from 2008-2012 inclusive and the more interesting stat is that for the 2011-2012 season, we sold over 250,000, and I would expect that figure to rise again next year.
As to how far we can go with this, have a look at Chelsea, a club traditionally smaller than City in my opinion, but who thanks to a decade of success have shirt sales of 910,000 currently.
Finishing top 4 and keeping this sales momentum going is imperative this season

I was listening to that, and the reason they mentioned us was to defend us, because Gray said 'one FA Cup and one PL title in 30 plus years won't make you on a par with those ahead of them in this list overnight'. He was insinuating that eventually we will get there.

Hmmm, whilst that may be true, what nobody did say was that figure (and our position) was a 5 year average and that last year we sold over 250,000. Based on that we are now up into the top 13 and rising. Interesting to see what being in the Chimps League does, cos Liverpool's projected figure for this year alone is down to under 750,000 (compared with an 810,000 average over a 5 year period).

not bad considering 13 years ago today we were playing Lincoln City in the 3rd Division of English football?

A quick interpolation shows a constant 22% a year growth rate over five years.

Extrapolating, we would be at about 676K in another five years at the same growth rate.

Winning the league and two years in the Champions League should give us a higher growth rate though. Around 30% for the next five year would get us above Chelsea's current level. Not impossible at all.

stats show anything half the time

They might try reducing the bloody price for starters.

But the reality is, clubs like United and Liverpool have a much more prominent brand than we do. It's right to say that you can't compete with those levels of sales without sustained presence in Europe, and ideally doing very well in them too.

It's very early days for us, and like Chelsea, we were never really on the radar for foreign fans. It'll take at LEAST 10 years to be considered on a par, and only if we continue to be successful.

Shirt sales aren't the be all and end all of course, but they are indicative of the fan base out there. I'd also like to think that maybe the typical Mancunian City fan has a sense of style in their dress code and possibly chooses to buy a smarter item of clothing (even if City branded) than the shirt.

Some areas (Newcastle and Liverpool for example) almost demand you wear the shirt!

Spot on. 17th is good considering where we were. I can City in the top 10 with a few years and over a million shirts sold within 10.

This is probably a major reason City are going with Nike from next season. They are more likely to be able to meet demand and probably have better distribution outlets worldwide.

Yeah, wish they wouldn't do this. And before anyone chimes in with 'don't buy one each season' - I don't! Have invested in a few since we've returned to Umbro though, lovely shirts.

I´d say that there´s a number they forgot to mention..

I believe it's the same for every club now, new home and away every season.

Are Liverpool's shirt sales increasing or decreasing? Their lack of success doesn't seem to have had any major impact on their brand... or has it?

Came across this totally by accident.
I wonder how our shirt sales are doing these days??

Couldn't find figures for 2014-15 but in 2013-14 we sold 300k apparently. Still not in the top 10 clubs for shirt sales though.

We should never have sold Richard Dunne!
Would love to see him back in some capacity, however that's digressing, in KL over Xmas and only 3 scum shirts and 2 city shirts seen whilst I was there.
They are not as big as they think and we growing very well indeed
