I was reffing my lad’s team today and a series of events caused a lot of controversy.

We were 4-2 up with 10 minutes left. The opposition scored, for the ball out of the net and raced back to restart. They got underway and with 2/3 minutes left, equalised. Again they got the ball and legged it back. They need a win to go top. In the last minute, they snatched a winner and all ran off the pitch and were some 10 yards off the pitch for about a minute.

My goalie kicked the ball back and then one player said “let’s kick off”. The opposition had 2 or 3 players and the goalie on the pitch. The rest were still going crazy off the pitch.

I had a flash back to France ‘98 and Darren Anderton’s last ditch tackle against Argentina. I let them kick off. The opposition coaches were fine with it but some of the parents weren’t happy.

Have I acted within the laws of the game by allowing the game to be restarted?

Uh No, sorry.

This came up during the world cup when a few teams (England included) tried to take quick restarts while other teams were still celebrating.

Every time they got pulled back. Everyone has to be in their own half.

I think its 7 players in your own half to restart.
??You were reffing and you refer to one team as 'we' - sounds fair ;-)

But that’s if they’re on the pitch. These players were well off.

Doesn't matter.

Under Fifa’s laws, a restart can be taken once all of the following parameters are met:

  • after a team scores a goal, the kick-off is taken by the other team.
  • all players must be in their own half of the field of play
  • the opponents of the team taking the kick-off are at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball until it is in play
  • the ball must be stationary on the centre mark
  • the referee gives a signal
  • the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward
  • the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player

I’m the coach. If the league don’t appoint a ref, the home coaches have to do it.

With hindsight, I’m glad we didn’t equalise but I thought I was right at the time. They were clearly trying to waste time. There was the initial celebration and then one player started to wave others over. I think they knew what they were doing.
